I wear sunglasses for water sports. Today, I rather spectacularly crashed out in a big wind gust, my prescription sunglasses which were secured by a shoelace style retaining cord behind my neck washed off my head and disappeared :(
I'm getting new sunnies... and I'd appreciate suggestions on how to secure them and to keep them from washing away in my next crash!

Thats easy..... the lower loop goes over your head so even if they come off they stay attached around your neck. A random piece of plastic with 2 holes in it makes a synching button

If you wear a hat you could tie them to that. That way it floats if it does all come off.

However, if I use a safety pin to clip the loop onto my shirt, I should be ok as I have yet to loose my shirt...! The one weak link in this is that I don't think I will have holes in my sunglass arms to attach the cord, but I perhaps can drill some.... here is a side-on picture of the sunnies I am considering. I am not confident about drilling in to them...but that would provide a secure solution.

Drilling into expensive sunnies is a bit of a downer but it is the most secure solution. You could just gaffa tape the lanyard on but that's probably less neat, less secure and more temporary. If you do drill make sure that the position wont interfere with the comfort... usually toward the front of the frame to avoid the knots rubbing behind your ears. With my method there is no need to pin the lanyard to your rashie... the sunnies go on and are cinched behind your head by the sliding button... then the loop on the other side of the button goes over your head and down the front of your wettie/rashie. Ear seals, zinc and a hat over the top and your bulletproof!

Just don't wear sunnies. Big crash and the lens ends up in your eye.... No thanks.

Plenty of straps for sunnies that float, I use the brightest colour one available, makes it easier to find them on the surface.
I wear a hat with chin strap and usually stays on in all but the biggest crashes, usually loose hats before the sunnies as the hats tend to sink
Drill a hole in the arms and stitch with needle and thread though the float if you don't think it is secure eg the arms on the Oakleys pictured above

I've lost an expensive set of RayBan prescriptions years ago, and it was because I had a false assumption that I would be able to find my sunnies with that green PolaSports strap. Yeah they float, but guess which part of it floats and is visible, hmm about 5% of the neoprene itself! Grrr lost big time! I tried to go back and find them but after an hour and so much chop I had to give up! Those floaties only work in calm waters. The best thing to do is what @snalberski said above, tie em to you in some way!

I feel for you, NorthernKitesAUS! My friend tried to grab my submerging hat (and possibly sunnies) as he went past, but the NW bluster was too strong and he couldn't execute the pickup! I went back today at low tide to cast an eye over any flotsam and jetsom, but no cigar. Oh well, my sunnies were getting old anyway.

PS: Daveisthekotz: that's cool if you prefer no sunnies, but take care to avoid cataracts, etc. I tend to be on the water at around midday mostly, so the glare is pretty intolerable for me.

Over your nose n ears

Wear contacts and cheap sunnies that don't matter if you lose them. Need new sunnies each year or so anyway as wearing them in salt, sand, bumping etc stuffs them.

Yeah but not all of us have vision capable of being corrected by contacts.

As for not wearing sunnies my eyes are so red after a day on the water that cant be good so i persevere but they are annoying and never clear

and 100% bio certified take aways, we've been promoting a bring your own scheme with a price reduction , and a free cup scheme, to be honest I've lost a bit of take away buisness but knobs like you don't care as long as they're saving 50 cents

Wake up! Maybe get out of your snack bar and take a walk down any beach on the south coast, if you invested half the time that some of us have you might be enlightened, it's not uncommon to spend a whole day clearing less than 100m of beach.

If you could read, you'd have picked up that I wrote "tie them to your hat or wetsuit". I've broken a few pairs but not lost one yet.

It's no wonder you seem to be the brunt of a lot of negative comments, so quick to fling sh!t from a distance.

Unlike you I've done plenty of R&D on this design (ie: innumerable crashes with sunnies coming off) and I can tell you your imagined strangulation scenario is a pure fantasy. The possibility of an unreasonable force around the neck when your sunnies come off in a crash is the same as the amount of times you've tried this design... exactly zero. Having said that I just looked at the nextstrap and it is virtually exactly the same design as mine with the addition of a potentially failable and unnecessary clip in the middle that you imagine to be some sort of must have safety device. The only thing that a snap piece is certain to ensure is that there is still a way to lose your sunnies.

Coincidently I designed a version 2 which uses bungie chord instead of dyneema . No sliding cincher is required... just a knot at the right spot for a snug comfortable elasticised fit. The bungie is anchored to the spectacle frame by a knot at the end and slid under a short piece rubber tube on the arm. This now means no holes are now required in your new $250 sunnies (and mine which I just ordered!) ... it is remarkably solid. The end loop goes over your head as in version 1 meaning they never go astray.

Connecting your glasses to your hat won't save your glasses ,you just get to watch both stink to the bottom unless your quick to grab it .if you do that attach a floaty between them to stop them sinking ,or go for the string or Velcro around the neck ,that's what I'm going for next season ,

Would a tether to your go go jo work. That might stop them sinking
but you could possibly try buying at any good beachside cafe for kiters.

You're assuming a lot about me, let me tell you a fact, I would never buy a $250 sunnies...You're saving a lot with $15 strap, properly designed?! Whow, mate, you just contradicted yourself BIG time.
