Greta stuff mate, I got a 5yo that wants to get into it so I just got him a trainer that he can play around with. I got a question, how big is the kite he's using and where do you get a harness small enough for a kid?
Hey Marty,
I started Nate on a Ozone IMP 1.5m foil within 6 months I bought him a 2.5m Wainman school Kite so that he could take to the water. The harness is a flying objects Minx, one problem its a waist harness and at their age they don't have a chest so the harness rides up putting them in an awkward position, I have just ordered him a xxxs seat harness, Sonya at Westoz board sports has been a great help, I can't remember the brand of harness I ordered him Ill find out and post. The kite Nate is flying in the video is an Ozone REO 5m. Great kite but he gets over powered above 15 Knots and at this stage he knows about depowering but can't adjust kite power himself so I always make sure he is slightly under powered.
When Nate first began flying a ILE kite I made sure that I was always hooked up to his harness with my leash, the first time I let him go was terrifying, but I had drummed into him how to release which he has now done on several occasions, so I now feel confident in his ability to deal with a dangerous situation.
Another problem we faced was bar throw, I originally let Nate use my Wainman Bar but he wasn't strong enough to activate the Safety release, I then let him try several other brands but the throw was to long and when he let go of the bar he couldn't reach it again, Jason at Westoz advised that we try the Blade uni with its adjustable throw, perfect but now we have another problem, at 23 kgs Nate doesn't produce enough resistance for the bar safety to fully activate, leaving him in a semi powered situation after safety deployment. I am currently talking with Blade to rectify this problem still waiting on the revised swivel to arrive. Will let you know how we go.
Don't know the situation in QLD but here in WA we have groms everywhere learning to kite, one of the manufacturers needs to address the need for a dedicated small person quiver, I am going to approach some of the majors to see if they are interested. Again I will let you know how I go.
I'm sure I don't need to tell you Marty but keep the little tacker safe.
