saw these and was wondering if anyone has one? Also do you reckon it would be bad for your kite?

cheers,

When we were doing Best kites back in the day, they were all shipped to us in compression bags. About 1 in 20 would suffer some damage from extended storage in a compression bag, bladders can get pinched. Valves can get bent out of shape, I would not put a Naish in one and expect that the octopuss system still worked. The do put a lot of force on a kite, and you need to be careful how you fold the kite before putting it in the bag.
Its not space thats the issue so much when travelling its weight. Maybe only half compress them if you were really tight on space?
They are readily available from places like spotlight too, no need to pay 20 pounds plus shipping.

I used these last weekend. Not a new idea, but great that someone has made some that are tough and kite size. Best trick to save weight on checked in luggage is to compress two kites (or one kite and clothes/wetsuit) and put them in one kite bag and take as hand luggage

I take the extra time to be careful rolling up the kite so that valves are against dacron etc. And you don't have to compress to the max either.

We have used these compression bags for a while now also, but most the ones you buy locally don't have a user friendly valve, (designed to use with a vacuum cleaner). These new ones have a Kite pump attachment which are specifically designed to be used at the beach when packing your gear in your bag.

From my travels it is the actual bags that you travel with that make up the majority of the weight. Compression bags allows you to pack down a kite in your suitcase or even you carry on baggage. Spreading the weight over a number of items will help you slip through with no probs.

Flew home from Italy 2 weeks ago with Emirates carrying 38 kg of kite gear and luggage and was charged no extra until the flight from Brisbane to Mackay (virgin) where they slugged me $11 per kg over the 23kg allowable. Nice welcome home

Don't fly Vigin anymore. I fly Jetstar now, they have introduced the ability to prepay up to 40kg of luggage at reasonable prices if booked online (can be done from a phone at the airport!) Flew to Kitesurfari in FNQ recently with 32 booked and a 12kg carry on and paid no extra, other than 30kg pre booked!

Last time I flew Jetstar the landing gear failed to retract and we flew around Brisbane for an hour making sure we actually had wheels to land on.

But you make a good point!

Jetstar is great if you are the size of a Garden Gnome. If you are over 6' you're gonna be stuck on a torture ride for the duration of the flight.

Did the red eye from Perth to Goldy a month or so back, worst flight in my entire life. 5 hours of pure hell. With my knees embedded hard into the back of the seat in front of me for take off, I thought it would be a bloody awful flight, then the person in front of me reclined their seat and the guy next to me kept falling asleep on my shoulder.

My right knee which was on the aisle side of the seat got bumped every time a tray service came around.

NEVER AGAIN!

... ha ha ha, at 6'4" I too know very well that torture.

Last trip I had the person behind me who keeps putting things in and out of the pocket so you get jabbed in the small of your back, so now you cop it from front, back, and sides ,,,, just to add the last****** straw of misery.

All they gotta do now is make the ceiling lower so your neck can be cranked over,,, now that would be the final straw,,, ahhhrrrgggggg

cheers for now,

Robbie

haha! Actually I don't care if they lower the ceiling at all, I can stand upright under the locker in a window seat!!! LOL!
Youse tall/big 2868's should suffer you take up so much more room and you don't have to pay extra its a rip off!

@Darren, virgin are no better on the sardine factor

I used to call jetstar sh1tstar, now I still call them that if the wheels don't work, but they do have a much more sensible and flexible user pays luggage system and Virgin in the meantime, who were once awesome, have gone the big gouge!!!
I cashed out my Virgin points a couple of weeks ago and am still waiting for my purchase/reward! They have slipped up big time IMO.
