last night my car was burgled and my four kites and harness was stolen. My car was parking in a, thought to be quite secure, carport on the back of a complex in Halls Head, Mandurah.

Each of the kite had my name and number on them with marker: Andrash 0407 445 715.

They were
12m Ozone Catalist (older model) red
9m Ozone Enduro V1, bright orange
7m Ozone Enduro V1, green
5.5 Cabrihna Drifter, blue

They also took my near new ion seat harness, size small with a sliding bar, but they did not take my two surf boards and the bar with lines which were also in the car.

There were a few other cars around under the car ports. They were not touched, although they were all better looking than my old Subaru. So, I think, the burglars knew what they were going for. I also reported it to the police.

So, please be alert and if you see anything similar "for sale" get in touch.

The burglars look for any cars with stuff in them, most nights.
It doesn't matter if you live somewhere rich or poor, they check all suburbs.

My suburb they usually come by about 2:30 - 3:00am, couple of times a week.

The best solution is to park the car next to a dog. Preferably big, and mean.
Then close the gate behind the dog and the car.

sux big time. hard to say if opportunistic or not. I'm on the lookout for a 5.5m drifter if I get hold of one will let you know

Crop a picture of where you wrote your name on it, so we know - in case they scribble it out..
Also put an add on gum tree in kites for sale etc.
They won't be moving about because of the closures. So possibly will advertise one.
Most people know kites have value these days even meth bandits..

Thanks Guys, yes I am watching all second hand outlets too. I think, whoever did this, they did not know about kites. They took my harness, but not the bar and lines and not the two surf boards. So, they will not use them, but likely to try selling them for a few dollars. Beyond my frustration, it's really sad...

I moved to Halls Head 6 months ago and I thought that sleepy place for retired and holiday people would be the safest... of course not. So if any locals read this, be alert.

My name and number is on the leading edge on each kite. Usually there is a white space for this at the centre of the leading edge, close to the pump valve (depending on brand). I wish I could send a picture of it now...:-)

I am almost glad it is not windy these days, paddling my SUP just wouldn't make up for it and keep me sane...

In my general area mix of city and coastal towns and a population of 300,000 + we are getting about 250 thefts from cars a month reported, probably a another 30% more where people don't bother reporting it, 99% are left unlocked.

Lock ya car and don't leave anything in view, especially bags, sign of the times

There are basically no consequences to robbing cars. 9/10 times they don't get caught, and when they do it's really a nothing punishment. Robbing houses they get in way more trouble, and way more Rottweiler bites.

I don' t get it. Why steal kites , another kiter won't buy them knowing their stolen ,there is no demand for them .Whats the ratio of kiters per head of population? 1 in a thousand ? 1 in 10 thousand ? Unless your a kite tourist going up coast never coming back. Mobile phones and laptops are best items to take. Small easy to carry, anyone may buy them even if they don't need it. Tradey's tools would be another in demand item .

I thought cash converters etc don't buy kites because they can't 'check' them??

That's interesting as I see an ebay seller in Surry Hills NSW always selling second hand gear, usually a lot of Cabrinha stuff. I have contacted them a few times to ask where they get all their gear from and I don't get a response. They are also quite rude when it comes to pickup and postage as their postage costs are pretty excessive.

Te descriptions all sounds a bit repetitive and made up... like ..

stealing from cars is an opportunity thing, the fact they took the harness and left the lines shows they had no idea, they're just guessing at what's valuable.
Just don't leave goodies in your car. Other kiters will buy cheap kites, even knowing they're stolen.

Cash Converters will take them if they think they can turn the over and make a profit. They have to record all purchases on a database that compares police records of stolen property with the secondhand dealers. If a match pops up the dealer has to hold the item and police will be notified. It's a flawed system because you're relying on human data entry at both ends. You only have to record a twin tip as a wake board and it won't match. And who records the serial number on their kite...?
