G'day guys, looking at heading down to byron for a kite/surf holiday with the missus bout november, just wondering when your season kicks in, and also where and what wind direction you need?? is there any flat water spots or is it just surf??

direction best is N-NNW, the wind is on right now,usually blows right through til march,no flat spots only surf,there are some issues regarding kiting between the pass and the wreck,best to set up north of the wreck and kite over to the pass although most touros set up at clarkes,dont fly anywhere near the flagged area,and avoid flying your kite over beach goers close to shore,there have been a number of incidents and a ban on kiting in byron is on the cards

The correct NSW rules are keep:
-60m off any person or non powered vessel in water
-30m from any object
-60m either side of flagged swimming areas and 500m out in front of flags.
Now technically you have to wear a lifejacket when more than 400m from shore, so you shouldn't pass in front of flags........but we have tried to establish a good relationship with lifeguards and just give the flags an obvious wide berth. To those blow in idiots that have been kiting within the flagged area at Lennox.....grrrrrrrrrrr!

yeah Byron is awesome but its a seriously crowded beach with high tensions with local non kiters and lifeguards- for good reason too. Only kite up towards teh Pass, kiting around the wreck, and main beach is bad - onshore, loads of people downwind. stay up at the pass or clarks beach, or Thompsons rock. Not down infront of town. Take it easy near teh beach - best to tranist out from the beach quickly and get away from the people. There's a solid sweep into the bay so get out the back of the waves ASAP.

front side (natural) beach runs are awesome from Broken head or Suffolk Park to Cosy Corner.
Lennox Head Beach runs are sic too.

All the best spots are north of Lennox.

If youre a bit new or friends are, and you want more space - head to Brunswick Heads south of the surf club - awesome.

Nightclubs - Lala land and beach hotel are good - Make sure you wear your water sunnies and harness with retractable board leash. Its a definite ice breaker with the ladies.
