Planning Bali July holidays. Thinking 5 nights in Balian with wife and kids 3 and 6. Keen to surf and kite. What's your experiences and opinions of kids and security here?

Gday depending on the age of the kids,if they are competant in the surf should be ok but its not a great beach for swimming, pool for use at hotel on the beach, not a great deal to do there for the wife and kids just chill ,relax but great for surf in the morning kite in arvo if winds favourable.Just noticed kids ages,if they are happy splashing around in the pool all good.

Been 7 times and back this year, beautiful laid back location.

Not ideal beach for kids, no security issues, plenty accommodation options, no shopping for wife but yoga and massage if thats her thing

Average but consistent surf, if kutas flat balian has surf, good kiting july august, windckicks around 11 switches off late arvo, minmum 10m kite with surfboard, have fun,

Have been to Balian a couple of times. Very laid back.

The accommodation at the end of the road at the river mouth is a great family spot. Swimming pool, bar etc.

Surfer 62 knows the place and can give you all the info you need.

The food cooked by the locals on the beach is great.

Well worth a trip up there!!!!

Forgot to mention 6 shark attacks in last 6 years or so, none fatal and last was january 2017, probably statiscally bad for one surf spot anywhere, hate body dragging there, river mouth feeds into middle of break.

Balian is probably my favourite spot in Bali. I found it very safe but twice had to rescue my son when he was carried away in a killer rip whilst boogie boarding. Pondok Pitaya is a very cool spot to stay with the family.

Had several trips here - here are some tips for you

surfing - get up early before the drive crew arrive and get out at about 8 when they arrive -

there is a rip which heads out from the right of the main break - use it to get out

Sharks - this place a reputation of bull sharks - due to the river mouth - google balian shark attacks - there have been 5 in the last few years - mostly bites to the arm - in merky water but the guys all survived but nasty-

I have seen several sharks jump clear out of the water - so if I had kids I would stick to the pool

Kiting - wind will kick in by 12- 1 if it is going to - You need to be able to kite upwind - take a bigger board or flat surfboard to make it easier - 10 or 12 m kite average 14 - 18 kts but July may be a touch early for the consistent wind
the rip - it can be nasty when surf is bigger -

If the wind drops and you can't get back up wind you can kite around the corner and get in on that beach - I would recommend you take a walk and look at it so you know it is an option

Get off the water at 4 pm as the wind will drop fast - you don't want to swim here

have fun !!!
