am interested in getting a first kite. the BWS noise is affordable and looks designed for the type of kiting I'm interested in. Was at the beach today and someone said:

that they didn't last very well

weren't great upwind.

and

were a copy of another kite brand

Is this accurate? what should i look for in a surf kite.
bare in mind i am a beginner and will likely crash the kite (eventually in the waves!)
advice appreciated.

someone is telling you bullsheet

they will be fine to learn on, they will take a beating and last

you can pick up a good one second hand one for $500

They are a good reliable, sensible kite in my opinion. I love them in super gusty conditions.
They go upwind fine and they drift well. Good for a learner.

I learned on one. Nice and simple, easy to fly.
One thing worth mentioning if you buy one a couple of years old, they are about 1m bigger than most other brands. The recent noise pros sizing is in line with most other brands these days.

At least one school here in Queensland uses BWS as their school kites, as part of their Jeep Kiteboarding School program.

Never flown them so can't comment, but you would think they are alright for a beginner if a school is using them.

great kite . I have the 2012 and is two meter bigger. For example when I laid the 6 meter BWS kite on top of my Naish Ride 8 meter it has the same foot print. Cheers. I got the bWS for $ 300.

Great stable grunty kite, which goes upwind like every other kite when ridden in the right conditions.

From memory the were originally based on the Slingshot Rev. Which was a great kite. Still seems them around today so that says something.

I have been kiting about 1.5 years now, I started on bws kites and still ride them, they are great for beginners as they have a lot of static grunt which keeps you up and going also the drift and stability helps so much for learning, plus tough as and super easy relaunch
