Hey finally some wind for the Nationals - there was absolutely nothing on the weekend. I went down there today and took in a few heats. The wind was really onshore at about 18kts and there was a bit of swell - not much though.

Only saw one bow kite...

Here are a couple of pics:

good luck in the waves Keahi...sorry I couldn't make it up. Only one Bow...oh well at least there were 3 in the top 7 at the flatwater nats.
Maybe they are more for freestyle and not surf?? Who knows? Good luck to all. Hope you get some more wind and waves. Rich

Yeah, just went down to Maroochydore river mouth hoping to get a session in before low tide... no real wind to speak of...maybe 10kts max.

Bit of bad luck for all those who travelled up for the comp.

Looks like we'll get some good wind over the weekend though

Come on guys...let's get the facts straight.......

On Monday the wind maxed out at 14 knots for about 45 minutes when the open mens pre-semis were on (JB and Aaron won their heats)The juniors also had one descent heat. With a big sweep running south to north at 2 knots plus the wind really only got to 12 knots on the water. The other heats were run in much less wind and several heats were stopped mid session or postponed due dying winds. The organizers did a great job considering the conditions they had to deal with for 4 days straight. Tuesday also was windless and wed is final day with no good wind f'cast (except for BS Beaureau of met).

There were 2 bows...my 16 crossbow and Keahi's switchy. BEFORE ANY OTHER GOOSE SUGGESTS THAT THEY DON"T GO SO WELL IN SURF>>>>>>>>>> GO TO MAUI AND YOU"LL NEED A CALCULATOR TO KEEP COUNT OF THEM. C kites in Maui/Oahu (IE: descent surf) are becoming rarer by the week...just came back 5 weeks ago......around 60% of all kites are bows at Lanes and Ka'aa point(kite beach). You can email the stores over there to verify my figures if you have any doubts.
Cheers

Just a quick thanks to the AKSA team for once again lifting the bar with Australian Competition. With mother nature lettingus down a little bit, We were able to complete a full Single Elim. in every dicipline! With only just over 2 more hours needed to complete the Double! But surfing seemed to be all that MN wanted us to paticipate in. A big thanks goes out to all the volenteers, and Association committee members for providing by far the best base for a comp that we have seen yet! Also the number of sponsors that providied everything from scafholds to massive prize pool! I would also like to comend all the competitors, we are becpoming more and more professional every year, much of this is due to the attitudes of the riders, more helping hands, and constructive coments.

Well done to the Place getters, but also well done to everyone who managed to put any display together in some very trying conditions.

All up, a great time was had by all, thanks everyone involved! I look forward to seeing you all again in NSW for the 2007 Wave Championships.

Speak soon,

regards,

JB

I hear Aaron Jarmin won it with JB Messenger runner up. In the ladies young sydney girl Marine Sudre edged out Terrisa McKirdy. Congrats to all of the above. Haven't heard about the juniors or any other placings. Maybe someone that was there may add something at some point.
couple replys to others comments...
Terry.. you soooo missed my sarcasm on my previous post...i was commenting on how a lot of people say bow style kites are good in the surf and lousy for progressive/ powered freestyle. I was suggesting they are ideal for freestyle firstly AND of course awesome in surf conditions.
Caution... back to WA again?? i beleive it is SA's turn if everyone had a go. queensland had 06 waves , Vic had flat water 06. WA 05, NSW for 04, Queensland 03 and Vic 02. If you ask the good people at AKSA -there is a hell of a lot more factors in where events will be held than whose turn it is.
I myself would like to see the two disciplines at the same venue next year. I would go back to gero for a double event...(though some people believe it was too windy there to have a good freestyle event).
I expect there were many people like myself that just found it too difficult to get away for another week off work to sit around crossing fingers hoping the wind blows.

Thanks Terry for improving on my judgement of the conditions. Whatever it was, the organisers and competitors did really well to put on what they did.

I wasn't making any comment about the bows - just an observation - I was just surprised that I didn't see more. As you say, in Hawaii they are really popular in the surf.

The Nationals go through a cycle, The first ever Freestyle nats was in VIC then QLD then NSW then WA, so the next step was VIC again, and making the 07 to be in QLD.

The Wave Nats Have gone, WA then QLD so unless SA, NT or VIC want to put their hand up NSW should be next in line. Traveling does suck sometimes thats why each event is rotated so everyone gets a go in their home state.

Anyway the final descision is ASKA's, but I think the rotation system is fair.

I would like to see it in NSW, I hope the NSWKBA are keen! Windang or even Lennox would go off.

regards,

JB
