Can anyone explain the nose down look when foiling. Obviously its a balance thing when the boat is foiling but it just looks wrong.

What multiple of the windspeed can they do? Looks like they're doing 30 knots in 12 knots of wind!

the 2013 final series in SF was unreal. 72foot foiling cats match racing just meters apart at up to 43kns. It was amazing to watch.
struggling to remeber exactly - but it was about 16kn of wind would cause the session to be called off if the tide was running the other way, they thrived in 10-14

How can they justify spending this much money? I doubt they could get close in productive advertising revenue. I can't imagine the money they spend would advance technology in commercial boating. I don't get it.

I think kite foiling does about 3 x wind speed subject to kiter skills and gear. And for about $5,000.

Just been watching highlights on youtube plus it's on Fox 501 . This is the most amazing yacht racing I have ever seen. The guys on the coffee grinders are keeping up a head of pressure for the hydraulics and team NZ has guys on a push bike set up to pump even more head of pressure. The more they tack and trim the foils , sails and rudders the more pressure they need , its bloody amazing. The technology is insane .In previous America's Cup races they might do 2 or 3 passes on a leg , these guys are doing up to 8, so just imagine how hard the crew have to work. I never thought I'd say this but I hope the Kiwis win , would definitely fly over to watch this next year.

They reckon by the time they reach the finals crews will be scoring 100% on the foil , best so far is 94%. bjw this is the America's Cup it's all about winning these guys have an unlimited budget, all these teams have spent 100s of millions previously to win on yachts that will never be used again.

3 main guys control the boat the skipper and a tactician with a game boy style controller for the hydraulics and a dedicated foil trimmer.

Anyone think the coverage & app so far is terrible ? I remember watching the 2013 series and it was amazing. I'm hoping it's just because this is the Qualifying series and not the main event but with all the technology available this is super disappointing. Can't even watch the full race replay .

I'm watching live in Sweden via paid streaming service. No wind today so they are showing reruns. Been watching every day ( recovering from injury). Best sailboat racing I've ever seen.
I think the nose is down to keep mast and sailing wing at best angle.
They are doing 2-3x windspeed.
Boats are supposedly 10mil usd, but the campaign costs 100 mil. So how do you estimate?? Big bucks, big projects, big fun. Dude like Larry Ellison has money to pay.

But yeah, 2 kites, a bar, hydrofoil, board, some other gear. 5000 usd. Then you can put it into your Kia, drive to your spot after work and do 3x windspeed and have as much fun...

They are hawling some serious speed. I wonder if the nose down has something to do with touch downs also?

Hi mate it's all for the aerodynamic quite amazing.

Have a look how dated the Australia II looks now compared to these beasts.

Insane that they're worth as much as Formula 1 car. Obviously F1 has a huge worldwide audience so you can understand where the money comes from. No idea how they recoup the funds in the AC.

Annoyed. So in Australia it seems the only way to watch the AC is via Fox. So I signed up for a 2 week trial subscription to try it out (plus Mugello MotoGp this weekend). Fox Go works fine on the ipad but airplaying via apple TV to my living room is not allowed, and my 2011 Samsung telly is too old to allow me to download the Samsung Fox app. But in anycase, without an Foxtel IQ box I cant record any of the action and watch it at a sensible time & no replays are available.

Grrr - is this the way sport is going - all Pay TV only ? What are other Aussies doing ? $140 a month for a tv subscription seems unaffordable / outrageous to me.

Basic Foxtel is $50 a month, that's all you need really.

Don't give a penny to Murdoch and his neo-con agenda. Fox is just ****e anyway. Netflix all the way for me. Cheap and no ads. It doesn't solve your sport problem though I guess.

The nose down is all about speed, they set the foil up for a neutral flat boat upwind, but when they spin it down wind the boat goes faster so the foil produces more lift. the nose down is to counter act that extra lift produced. i believe they don't have any pitch control on the rudder during racing and only 3 degrees adjustment between races. the main foil is very adjustable, watch the close ups of the foils during tacks, Crazy articulation and I believe they are sequenced to do the same moment each tack, thats how they get their foiling tacks so consistent. I have good mates on many teams a close friend is a designer on BAR yet they won't tell me zip. I did have an interesting conversation with one of them about cycling grinders last summer and they said the had looked in to it a discounted it (way before the kiwis had shown their hand) before he worked for the team he was working on defence systems designing missile tracking systems. These teams really spare no expense. but then agin if i were one of the richest men in the world, without a doubt i would be spanking 100+mil of pocket money on the cup, no point in being the richest man in the grave yard. We spank all our spare cash on kites and boats...so do they!

Interestingly the American, Swedish and NZ boats all have Australian skippers.

I saw team NZ practicing out in the Hauraki Gulf before the last Americas Cup - they were out burning around while I was having a kite.

I didn't even know that the boats were going to be foils, so I was quite tripped out, thought I was seeing things!

So massive and so fast, it was like some kind of alien spaceship hovering around, I thought, I gotta lay off the shrooms haha

Thanks Simon. Ill look a little closer at the difference in foils between upwind and downwind. Must say its a bit hard to tell sometimes as they are so close to the apparent much of the time. Insane sailing on any account.
To show my age, I remember watching Aust II in 83. Was 11 years old and watched every minute of every race, usually from 2am , absolutely enthralled. I thought that was amazing sailing then. Mind blowing how far it has come.

So who is everyone backing for the Americas cup? I'm ranking for most Aussi-ness and least annoying-ness.
1) Artemis Racing with Nathan Outterridge.
2) Emerates Team New Zealand with Peter Burling. (bonus point for hosting the next series nearby if the win)
3) Oracle Team USA with Jimmy Spithill.

Most important. Ben Ainslie must come last.
