Looks like tomorrow morning could be good training for L2L with swell to 4m and winds up to 35 knots.

I've was ****ting bricks on the water.... I was hoping they were lead ingots to help weigh me down...

Lasted about 15 minutes until I could safely be landed. Didn't want to jump as i knew I'd end up somewhere a few block in suburbia.

Johnny heiniken just took on the Brigde2Bridge and won on a foil, so there goes the swell factor cause its a **** fight under the Golden Gate Bridge with massive swell. As for weed... Not sure but it was an ebb I think so would have been plenty of stuff In the water.

i talked to some foil experts and they say weed is the foilers nightmare!
probably time to forget about it for L2l even the slalom board will not work with all that seawed in Perth.

Hope it wont become a massive issue for the oceanics as well?

i honestly don't think it's going to be an issue marv , but it's one of those unknown factors . We could be struck down with ****tons of seaweed this year or we could have clean oceans . All the time riding my sector in the ocean apart from a couple of occasions i have had no issues with weed .

are your sector fins straight?

also 20cm fins and 30 to 40cm to a massive foil are big differences.

what determines if there is seaweed or not?

sector has 5 degree cant if i remember on the front 24cm fins and 0 degree cant on the rear .

as to what determines the seaweed distribution .....

As I recall from last year there was heaps of seaweed at the L2L. More like long strains heading downwind you had to cross spaced about every 500m. In San Fran, at least in June there was no weed in the bay, it wasn't an issue over there.

Also the in San Fran the Bridge2Bridge was run in a flood tide - meaning the wind was with the current. Kiting there for the NA's under the bridge in flood tide the water was incredibly flat due to swirling water - almost glass in some points whilst lit on 7m, but with some horrible short chop at the edge of the glassy parts.

yea going flat out on 7m in pancake surface under bridge downwind then coming into a metre standing chop- wipeout g'teed with epic crashes

If your just cruising in the ocean on a sector, your probably not going to notice the weed too much. If you are cracking 25 plus knots and hit a decent amount, your suddenly slow down, or cavitate the fins and slide out.

If you were lucky enough to get a small swell day with 25 knots wind, and small amounts of weed, ie no storms leading up to the event, you could give a foil a good go, but if you hit the smallest tinest piece, you 'll end up coming off in an epic crash, or only be capable of doing 10 knots with a huge effort.

Even Johnno K had to jump off when he saw a sizey weed patch a few km off shore, If your half a chance of winning the event, why would you risk riding something that is likely to have a 90 percent failure rate, and require you to get intense physio work to fix your whiplash from crashing from such great heights.

Go luck to the brave ones, if you can't sit at 30 knots without a care in the world for weed, you might want to find another board.



The Oceanic serious will be fine for raceboards, the weed sits out a few km unless there has been a storm westerly. Ridden a lot out there and never had any problems aside from kiting a day or two after westerlies in winter or a serious 40knot SWer blow
