Hey,

Have recently ordered a slingshot foil and just wondering where are the best places to learn in vic/melb.

I have been strapless surfing for about a year so hoping to progress quickly.

Any first timer tips are welcome.

Helmet and foot hooks, forget what you know about weight distribution, it's all about keeping the nose down. currently in the same boat and I found it hard to keep it on the water(using 15 inch mast) the foil really wants to get up and foil..... tiring and yet exhilarating.
Enjoy

Hi Duff, I have just started too. I usually go to Hampton as the water is deep there (aside from the odd reef). It also seems to be OK in a light SSE which is all we seem to be getting these days.

Yes it does. So far have only butchered my foot on the foil

And that is just the beginning. It will be worth it. Once the beast is tamed your riding time will double if you want it to.

You could try Altona perhaps. Foiled there the other day in SE. PITA though to walk out until it is deep enough, knowing that there are heaps of rays about.

Balnarring. It's all sand except for the reef at the point. Watch out for moorings. They have big orange floats on them.

I asked the question about toeside turns just a week or so ago, plenty of good advise from other riders in it.

Bring foil down to surface, kite high. Turn it around on surface. Switch feet on surface before or after.
Do this at faster and faster speed.
Then try a flying heel to toeside gybe.
Then do switch before on surface, and down loop kite and come out of the turn flying.
Next step us foot switch flying ( I'm at this stage).

I find st Kilda great for a southerly, northerly Brighton (actually had a great foil downwinder from st Kilda to Brighton last northerly), SE-ESE is great at Sandridge in port Melbourne. All good deep water spots and east to get out from the beach.

There are many other threads in the forum on this. Worth a look.

Started foiling just before Christmas, already doubled my water time. My local has 3 sandbars which means body dragging out about 100m which is a pain and also means that the water is quite choppy. After about 6 sessions I am up and going with increasing glides up on the foil. I am better when running against the flow of the chop than with it.

My biggest problem at the moment is I am ending up further and further from shore as I head upwind in onshore conditions. I then have to body drag back in down wind which can be a bit tricky in light conditions... any advice on foiling down wind or at least across and not up wind would be appreciated.

Had the same problem mate. I just started looking downwind and the board followed. I found as long as the board is flat i can rocket down wind
