Hi all, I'm just starting to get out in some small waves (river mouth / beach break) on my Axis freeride foil & 5'8" New-wave board. I have a 450 that was great to learn on & have been using a 900 in flat water but now thinking of getting something in between for the surf.
My choices are 600 or 750, or am I better off just getting into a completely new bigger Wave/SUP foil setup.
Any advice would be appreciated.

It depends. I have a 95 and a 70cm.

I can crank harder on a longer mast and it's more forgiving of minor technique errors. I can keep the foil deeper which is always good.

The short mast lets me come in closer in the wave zone with less risk of hitting the bottom. The turns are more "glidey" than bank and crank. Even so, the turns can be quite tight. I feel that if I turn on the wave face the bank is similar because the mast is perpendicular to the wave. Not sure about that one yet. Turning on steep faced waves is still a bit of a novelty.

I fall a bit more with the short mast because the wing pops out more. I feel I need to have my back foot further forward so it doesn't pop up or out. I think that's because the triangle formed by my body weight and the length of the mast has sharper angles.

What has made the biggest difference to me is riding a sub-4' board. Less swing weight and much more agile.

I'd say go with the 750 or 700, best control. The 900 is a better all round freerider but may be a tad deep on reefs or shallower banks.

Agreed with the short board too. There is so much going on with foiling and waves atm, a hybrid or crossover board is great if you ride waves traditionally but for pure wave foiling, you could go as short as 3'6".

The 700 is a compromise for me. It is short enough to deal with launching and riding over/near/around the sandbars but still long enough that a lapse in concentration does not become a breach.

Ditto. 900 not responsive enough. I tend to ride with he board just skimming the water though, and more actively track the surface.

but there are advantages when you can directly communicate feedback straight to the Owner/Designer/Tester of a foiling company with over 10 years experience in, and a significant brand in world wide Foiling.

Such an awesome place to kite ...... Manawa, that would be a nice wave to foil off.

But those little reef out crops would be deadly on a foil in the lagoon. The damage to your body landing on one could end a kite trip.
