Training drills with you foiling buddy are essential and will simulate and prepare for real race situations.2 guys that train together and are very good at this show a tack training drill before the hydro foil pro tour.Usually you do 4-5 of them with short upwind legs.

I would've edited out the camera man shooting his wad at the end, but otherwise that was a really good clip of tacking: can see the angle to the wind, how their feet move what they're doing with the bar.

Am am I right in calling that a "duck jibe"? Seems to be easier to do than turning yourself downwind...

The crazy Mexican camera man. I think it was the 1st time he has seen a foiling tack, he got pretty excited.Correct me if I'm wrong but duck gybe is a windsurfing manoeuvre? I can see the comparison you made.Main difference is tack you to going upwind, gybes for going downwind (in kite racing).

Bow info and through the wind = tack. Duck tack then? The way I do it on the directional, the board's "bow" through the wind but my nose jibes. The board basically comes to a complete stop....not very practical.

Whatver its called, I need to learn it!

thats the key mate, lots of lift from the kite and also the foil! the foils needs to stay lefty through the weightless manoeuvre

Problem is, I like riding the foil under-powered, versus riding the small directional very powered. Just sheeting in and hovering a few inches above the board makes it easy, but when I have to carefully time when the kite flies over the zenith for max lift in low wind, it's just a fail-fest. The flying duck-tack looks "easier". But I think that's a whole other level yet...

Yesterday I was over-powered on the foil, tried a tack and had the power to float myself...but watched as the board spun 360s under me. Contrary bugger.

Leave the board out there buddy, it's the last thing to bring around. I reckon your back foot should hit the front strap when board pointing straight upwind is good for starters. From what I've seen everyone brings board around too far when learning to tac (me included). We're talking roll tac.
1. arse low and close to board
2. weight forward or more importantly not back (board under you not in front of you)
3. fly kite slowly over top with bar all the way out (you want the right amount of lift) Right amount of lift achieved by kite speed over the top.
4. dive kite and change feet, it's harder on a tube kite you might have to loop your kite in light wind.
5. patience and persistence
