Just made my de-power system to use on my ozone edges, thought i would show some pics of how it turned out(by me making meaning its a mate who is a rigger and me telling him what i need ) didn't want to include any moving parts like the ronstan pulley that the ozone "racing kit" comes with so we used the high load alloy thimble(pic 3) that we use all over racing skiffs and yachts this will mean no pulley blow outs and should never be a problem when i go freestyle riding at the beach.

Havnt had a chance to ride with it yet but hoping to get out there today on the 17 to test it out. will be alot cheaper than buying the kit from ozone aswell.

After looking at the pics from archies kit it looked really bulky where it attaches at the cleat so really tried to minimise this as you can see in pic 1, turned out a treat. also its all 1 line so easily replaced.

It adds in around 400mm of length so compensated with 3mm strops on the outside lines at the bar end.

All lines made using 3mm or 4mm dyneema so plenty strong enough and the cover that you hold is a 5mm soft cover that we tapered into the core.

will keep you posted if i manage to get out and test. would be interested to custom make these for people with other bands of kites.

having a quick google and looking at the pics of the bar seems as though it world work, would have to have some more detailed shots or better still get my hands on one to see, but pretty sure we could get it to work. My mate who is the rigger worked for oracle so knows his ****, and he enjoys his socks and thongs.

don't you reckon though in image 2 it shows this the clearest but the length of down pull you have like from your cleat to where it divides into the other 2 lines if you follow me? just seeing it looks real long don't know if their all like that or just personal preference

This might be a stupid question but where is the safety connected on that system , I am not familiar with the ozone set up so I don't know the origional safety setup? Is the safety the red ball ( one of the front lines) where the 2 front lines join ?

For example the north 5 line goes from the chicken loop up through the bar and all the way up to the center leading edge of the kite ... the north 4 line and I think the Cabrinaha is the same goes up to a split in the front lines and the kite flages out on the 2 front lines !

how is your system configured?

It seems neater where the cleat is.

It will be interesting to see if the extra resistance compared to using a pulley is noticeable.

In this Cabrinha setup, there is no safety as far as I can see other than to pull herself up the centrelines, which will normally kill the power. You can zoom in on the photo.

Looking at that video the original ozone safety goes from the chicken loop up thru the bar and up to that red stopper ball? Does this mean the ozone flags out on one front line?

Yes - through one of the front lines. Flags well except when u have lots of twists in the front lines from loops in one direction. With about 10 twists in front lines jamed on me one time - when I really needed it to work and got lofted into a boat ramp during gusty winter conditions (hospital visit!). So now if have a lot of twists in front lines, stop every now and then and get out.

I think they have been getting away so far without having a flag-out safety in races, which is maybe why near the end of the clip you see the same setup without the safety. It says though that the rule is you must have a flagout leash system, so maybe better to get used to having it?

It looks to me like it would be possible to rig it up so you could practice on land. Otherwise its going to take a lot of time on the water to get used to steering with either hand while sheeting with the other to keep your stance steady.
That might be something that could be rigged and sold? Ideally something that randomly altered the pull on the centreline and something that gave a bit more pull on either end of the bar when you changed tack.

The extra friction will be so minute you wont notice, we use these on all types of racing yachts, had them on my vang system on an 18ft skiff and if its good enough for that then im happy, also used on jib in-haulers on yachts like the living doll i raced on so they seem to work plenty fine. here are some pic where they are in situation





The safety hooks onto the centre line just under the red ball in pic 3, then runs through the bar to the chicken loop.

Some kites have replaced pulleys with those thimbles, for reasons of simplicity, line wear, and reliability. I think it is star kites off the top of my head. Seems like a good choice.

hey racers just an update on the system, got to use the de-power today not on the race board but a session either way and was well needed.had the 17 up first and it worked a charm, was so light to use and felt amazing. cant imagine how the pulley would really make any difference, but i'll let you know when i've used both.

started to get fresh so we pulled the big girl down and went for the 15,then things got real and started to get proper fresh, have just seen 20kms away had 40knts at the same time(whoops), had a blast until got a gnarly gust and had to pull the safety was just getting lofted away downwind, worked a treat, props to ozone for that one.

had a mate with me trying it out aswell. so was safe as houses.will post a good crash later if i can get it on here.

all in all the system worked amazing and will now be making them for all 4 kites. let me know if anyone is interested in getting a custom setup made up for you.

I'm interested. I'm waiting to get my race board so it's a bit early to commit till I've had a few sessions.

What's with the silver bit under the red stopper ball in the close up pic. Is that one front line, if so are the front lines even length at that point?

the silver thing is an eyelet. just there whilst we made the system. thats the point where the safety joins in and the flag out on one of the centre lines.

Interestingly enough when we made the system we picked up that the one of the centre lines was about 2-3cm shorter, so we will be taking the splice apart and lengthening it.

also looking into custom lines also. depending how much the race set cost from ozone.

Ha Ha just bought the same colour line from the boat store to do the same thing. Has a 800kg breaking strain. Going to replace the depower line on my bandit 4 with the new one from the chicken loop, up to the pulley and back to the cleat rather than splice a thicker line half way up, not sure if you get more purchase with a 12mm line rather than a 6?

What about depower line that runs under and through the bar? Any better?

Hey mate, not sure if she is on SB but Jill who is learning to race and has been watching the racing in Sydney is coming down to melb with the lake riders and she is a rigger. She set up Dave's north bar and pretty sure it works well. Maybe hit her up down there or get in contact with her and she could bring gear down. Or when your back the guy who has done my work may be able to sort you out.

I was hoping to get it sorted and use it before melbs.

If i get a chance I will post some pics of mine later on. Pretty similar to Aydens with a pulley where the thimble is. Kept the original depower line and block just took the line out of the block and attached the pulley to it.

Ok wasn't too keen on unrolling the lines just for a picture if you have already done it but did a quick scrible which may or may not help.

This looks great! (not the thongs & socks) But what's the aim of the game here? To increase range or just make it easier to grab whilst leaning back? And do you have to extend the steering lines or shorten up the fronts to cope with the extra reach on the depower? Or have I got this mixed up? (definitely I think!)

Still, my north trust bar has a tiny range and something like this would be great to make it more extendable. Extend back lines or have you increased attack at full power?

Also, would just one slider ring and 1:1 work well for freeriding? With increased range you would have to pump up less kites?
