I know a lot of people who have had the sinus surgery and most say it needs to be repeated every couple of years but they wouldn't want to go through it again.
Inflamed sinuses are a real bug bear. Once the sinus linings have been inflamed they are populated by inflammatory cells which react to all sorts of allergens and cause repeated bouts of inflammation which can quickly lead to infection. Inflamed sinuses make you feel tired and dull and make it hard to think clearly.

As a long term sinus sufferer who has the problem under control, here are my recommendations:

Avoid foods which you are allergic to. Allergists will tell you that food allergies only affect the gut but that is not true. Don't rely on skin testing for allergies. That only tests for one type of allergic reaction. Be in tune to your body and if you are feeling worse than usual think back to what may have caused it including foods. A clue is if you get a slight runny nose while you are eating or soon after. For me foods that give me inflamed sinuses are gluten containing foods, foods which have milk or cream in them, and chocolate. If I avoid them entirely I don't get inflamed sinuses unless it is allergy season - pollens.

In allergy season - dust and pollen overload - take daily antihistamines, especially when an Easterly wind is blowing, if you live in Perth.

If your sinuses are inflamed or if you have been doing something really dusty, flush with Fess Sinu - cleanse. I find two treatments 12 - 24 hrs apart are usually enough to settle the inflammation.
It is not pleasant and is not a permanent solution but it gets easier.

Since following these guidelines I have not needed antibiotics to clear infections.

I hope that helps. PM me if you would like more information.

Agreed, hit the daily antihistamines b4 you have an infection. I use one of the nasal sprays when I get a headcold to keep the air flowing because as soon as my nose is blocked I know in a few more days my teeth will feel like they are being pushed out of my head. The disclaimer here is that there is an addiction from overuse and possible nasal lining damage. So you need to check with your doc 1st and never overuse it.

I would have to 100% agree with Windxtasy. I had suffered with bad sinus ever since i could remember, but last year i read something somewhere about food being a cause etc, etc (can't remember where), but long story short i have stopped eating added sugar and use lactose free milk. Took about 3 months but I can confidently say that reducing these foods has totally cleared up my sinus. I still get the occasional sneeze but nothing like i used too.

Try to think what food you eat the most that in a logical mind doesn't fit with nature (for me sugar). Make up your mind to reduce it and see what happens. Can't guarantee success but it is worth a try.

I had surgery, what must have been 10 or 15 years ago, to help my breathing. I know they cut out my turbinates (I think that's what they called them), and did some burning of flesh in there. I also used Rhinocort, which they recommend not using, but once it started to take effect, it worked well.

Go see a specialist and see what they say. You would need one anyway for the surgery, and if there is nothing much they can do, I am sure they will tell you.

Same thing happens to me - definitely do the flush at least once in morning once at night, then good to go. Double with hayfever tablets and you are sorted!

Swear by it.... simples.

If you can afford the surgery then a clean out won't hurt as far as I can tell but I've had three goes at it over about 20 years and have never had much more than just a reasonable short term success rate in terms of sinus blockage and pressure relief.

I wouldn't have given it a second or third chance except for the fact that I have a scarred lung that I need to keep as clear as possible and continuous snot production doesn't help.....

Steam, fess and either antihistamine or those steroidal sprays are your best bet along with avoidance of possible food allergy produce. In my case cheap wine with those poxy additives send my snorkel and sinuses haywire most times and I'm thinking of trying a milk free diet (chocolate is a food essential) for a while also.

Good luck with it.

+1 I find after a sail I'm 100% better, if no wind I'll go to the beach just for a swim which makes a big difference, for me anyway.

I sometimes react to some beers, and the sinuses block up, so in an effort to stop that, I started homebrewing.

Its worked and solved the problem - I can't remember what the problem was
