I purchased a new ipad the other day and after a while it wanted to download a new operating system, i08. No problem, just let it go. After a day seeming to download, it was still going. No way to turn it off and every time you turned the pad on, away it would go again. At the time we were using our home wireless router but if we were on the road we would be using the pre-paid broadband which has a limited usage.
Finally got the bastard by running i-tunes on our home computer. The download was 2 Gig and was very slow. I set the computer up and it downloaded overnight. We have a satellite connection and it isn't the fastest.
Has anyone got a solution to this, either by preventing the pad from downloading in the first place or have an idea on how it can be done quicker and or cheaper just in case we are on the road and can't afford to let it download such a big file.
Not really a hater of new technology but I would like to have more control on what my instrument is doing.

The "new" iPad Air 2 comes with iOS 8 pre installed.
where did you get It?
also, you don't have to upgrade (and should never upgrade to an x.0 (8.0 etc)version any way.
to NOT upgrade
1. Don't go to "settings" -> "Software Update" -> "install update" and you will be fine.
the power is yours.

Install iTunes on a Windows PC or Mac (though many hate it) and then update the iPad through iTunes. Its much quicker.

iTunes is the worst invention since the invention of the cold war!

Get MediaMonkey Gold. It's pure gold!

DiskAid is also very good to manage files within your iPad.

And to be truly free - jailbreak it!

As westozwind said, the choice is yours, you don't have to update. As for you updating on the road with prepaid broadband, I think I can remember some incremental updates only being about 35mb? But, if I were on the road and dependent on my ipad, I would choose not to update as some apps have a fail with a new ios version and then have to be fixed and updated.

The ipad will only download apps larger than 100mb on wifi, if you try on your sim card, it will tell you that it will wait til you've got a wifi connection. So, I would assume the same would apply for ios updates.

Sure iTunes has its faults but if you own an IOS device it will make your life easier when it comes to backups and updates. This is one who ditched iTunes back in 2009 for transferring music to and from my old but well loved iPod.

Yeah, iTunes is a weird beast. It's essentially a database of all of your media. You can set it to use files rather than importing into its database though, which makes it a bloated media player instead of a database. It's in dire need of an overhaul.

iPhoto is even worse.

It's odd - Apple Operating Systems are top notch (UNIX), as is the hardware, but it seems they always fail at the applications themselves. With a few notable exceptions.

_____

As above; you don't need to download nor install the latest updates. it's optional. Of course.

Thanks for all your replies. I did not realise the downloads were optional. I'll have a closer look at the screens if and when it happens again. The unit we got was an i pad air not the air 2, got it cheap because it was an older model.
