I might be tough to do so, but ignore them Make sure your add says "phone calls only, no emails"
They tried same scam with me about a month ago, but it was two chaps, one after the other, and wouldnt you believe it, consecutive phone numbers with simular stories.

report it to gumtree of course so they can deal with the scammers.
being flooded by scammers is bad for their business.
the scammers get away with it because sellers are toooo lazy to klik a button

I like to string them along and pretend I'm gullible. Waste a little but of my time to waste a little bit of theirs and ask them stupid questions and stuff.
Then after mucking around for a bout 6 emails or whatever make a bold statement telling them what f u k wit low life scum they are and they can fu k off.
They usually never respond after the last one.

They tend to stop after the first few days when your ad drops down the list a little, but if you bump it they come back. They also have no idea what after 4pm means. The last ad I put on there must have gone up at about 3am in the morning, I had to turn my phone off because it was going off every few seconds.

Never educate them as to why they are so obvious string them along forever
The wife had one on the phone for an hour and 17 mins one time .Her story being she was 86 in a wheel chair with a flat tire didnt know how to turn on the computer ,plug it in what a windows key was or why a computer had windows in it etc and the phone that they called on was in a different room to the computer.
the more time they waste on you is less time they are harassing some poor or invalid whos husband had just died. These ppl have no morale's they think taking advantage of some one makes them better then others

Love Gumtree, it's my business! Look under community in the Newcastle area for my secondhand furniture add, that's where they put it
yesterday after I placed it under used goods.
I Hate how business use free advertising to promote themselves, of course it's alright for me...
I write emails to businesses saying how great it is to see new products on a secondhand site and wish every business in the world could be there!....
'Scammers' I'm setting up a fighting fund to combat them and need help! Please send a donation of money to my account so something could be done.
Thanking you a thousand times my friends......

Set up a fake hotmail account then go put your bosses car on Gumtree really cheap. Give the story how your leaving the country really soon. Need gone ASAP.

Poor bloke will have 200 messages and phone calls in the first hour.

My brother had that done to him (but with the Quokka a while back) and it isn't a pleasant week...

I've had heaps of success on gumtree and very minimal scamming. If it's priced right, it'll be worth it.

I have had clients genuinely ripped of online with sites like Gumtree. It does surprise me often just how gullible people can be, the last one bought and paid for a Quintrex 560 bow rider for $9000. (maybe at worst $30000 worth). I told him it was a little suss but still he went ahead and lost his money

Having said that i love it. I troll it almost nightly looking at boards and the like. When i sell on there i always have good success.

But don't email back to the scammers, you end up on a list somewhere and that can not be good, especially if you don't like junk emails

Just play along, then at the last minute tell them you need $50 to get to the western union office to send their money. Turn the tables.

This morning's excitement

Came on in the night and saw it when I woke up, when is it to early to call?
6.15am I called and got him at work, yes free and I was the first even though
The phone rang through the night.
Had to be gone today and was a genuine give away, will call back in his break
To make a time after 1 to collect, 'thank you God, I'm not worthy but I'll take it'.
No call back!!!
Doh some bugger must of offered him money, dam it.
Oh well I was close that time....
And please call and tex the number about a free van that Desmond missed out on.....
