my electric winch broke on my boat trailer what are the ones on e-bay like.My boat is 16ft fibreglass I am looking at a 4500lbs winch understanding that a pulley doubles the pulling power I would like to stay on a single line pull . My boat wieghs approx 800 kg so was thinking of getting some thing with a bit of grunt But I dont know about these ones on e-bay anyone had any dealings with them

As 4,500 pounds roughly equals 2050kg that is well over double the weight of your boat and as such is definitely a strong enough winch!
But I have not tried E-bay winches.
best bet is to read reports/feedback from buyers on the sellers site!

Why electric for such a small boat ? not hard to wind in at all .




Are your arms painted on?

Electric winches can be controlled remotely enabling easy launch and retrieval single handedly.

You don't need to lift 800kg you are only sliding it on. So any spec's around that weight are fine.

The mini 4x4 style electric winches with remote fob are very cheap $100 and seemingly reliable from other users I know of.

The cheap boat winches like supercheap or whitworths etc are not very good or reliable.

Rather than investing in an electronic device that will inevitably fail die to water/salt etc. Buy a good manual winch and fit your trailer with rollers and skids so you can drive on, much better investment and also much faster.

Another benefit is that you won't make many enemies at the ramp if you can drive on/off.

My electric winch is 25years old.

Also driving on and off digs holes at the ends of the ramps thereby causing huge delays because at low tide someone inevitably drops off the end and gets stuck.

lots here tend to do the drive on thing , rarely can they be quicker than winding on, and thats with a 6 mtr ali with full screens , hard top, in the wind

^^^ My boat exactly (for 15 years). The best thing is I would call the missus 10mins out and whilst you 'winders' and 'winchers' were using the left and right of the ramp, the good lady would reverse straight down the middle and I'd simply drive the boat on. No interruption to traffic (or damage to ramp - only the rear of the trailer was under water) and she'd drive forward as soon as the boat was hooked up with me in the boat. I jump out after she pulled forward and drive home - easy!

The only faster way is to have a spring latch that automatically secures the boat, although after seeing the result of a failure sitting at an intersection - I decided not to buy one.

^^I agree ,I live in Exmouth so we get lots of touro's, have no idea how to drive on, we go to the boat ramp regularly to sit on the beach havin a bevvy watching the fun . Not many get it right , the wind upsets them

You can power up a hand winch with a car starter motor from the wreckers with a couple of pulleys and a belt.
