My POV is only criminals or conspiracy theorists (often the same thing - drug induced paranoia or psychosis) would worry about this. at the end of it uninstall the app FFS. Even if you are a cheater or closet toilet trader or dabbler in recreational drugs, do you really think the government woukd risk the shxtfight or be motivated enough to use the data for anything other than its intended purpose? they dont care about your petty indiscretions. im pre registering or whatever. bring it on what a great tool and lets get back to some normality asap

That totally stinks. Shouldn't some sort of evidence be needed to give a ticket? Posting a photo on FB that could have been taken at any time (in these cases actually taken last year) shouldn't constitute enough evidence to issue a ticket. Perhaps it could initiate a 'please explain', and the person be given the opportunity to do so, but to simply issue the ticket based on effectively nothing shouldn't be allowed. Dare I say this mentality reinforces the doubts on the Pell case.

I think if you released an app, you could rely on peoples need to show they are better than others to encourage them to use it.

You can introduce random data into your contact/location feed. This would allow someone to argue that the data may not be 100% accurate, so you may not have been where it said you were.

Its solvable.

What is going to happen is REGULATED society.

The language being used is that IF we agree to wear the ankle bracelet we MAY be released on early parole.

Then all of a sudden you have to prove your innocence, and no, there is no presumption of innocence in Australia, that's a USA thing.

Saw the app in action last night in China. Looks exactly like sat nav except a bunch of red dots on the screen showing where people currently infected are located. Click on a red dot and it shows where that person has been in the last two weeks. Remembering Chinese cities have been in complete lockdown so the red dots had only been to the shop and back twice in two weeks.
Would be great to have this also linked up to peadophiles and rapists.

This sounds like a steaming pile of BS, for a start were travel restrictions in place last year???

And it's surprising hoe many people are ignorant on how fines/infringements work. The default setting of the entire judicial process is to send people to court, they can either plead guilty and cop the fine/penalty, or plead not guilty and everyone goes to trial.

Now what infringements/tickets/fines do, is give you a CHOICE and a short cut to pleading guilty, you do that by paying the fine at the post office or whatever. The cop giving the fine doesn't choose your innocence or guilt. You do by paying it or taking it to court as a not guilty.

The advantages of the infringement system... the punter stays out of court, doesn't get a criminal/court record, it doesn't choke up the courts even more and the ticket penalty is always way less than what court can hand out.

Got a ticket? You ALWAYS have the option of having your day in court, and you know what, you don't even need to prove you're innocent. It's up to the cops to prove to the magistrate you're guilty.

( if you are a high level criminal and have a warrant they can surveil your phone anyway ) but just talking about average joe.

Right now I think I'd rather have lived in the the U.S.S.R. or the Democratic Republic of Germany than in the modern world. At least in those places the average person was suspicious of authority and didn't believe just because news organisations and people in government said it was so.

No, I think a lot of people would be worried about abuse of this data, not just the consistent nut jobs.

That's right FN, if it can be shown that data has been misused and someone has broken the law then they'll have their day in court ............... especially if they're from a government agency.

I envy people who have always lived under a benign government. Some of us have not been so lucky and governments change and often well intentioned rules get abused by future regimes. I hope that doesn't happen but once (or more) burned twice shy.

Maybe so but history shows far too many instances where we need protecting from government.

so uninstall the app after its done. factory reset your phone. who cares if they know where you have gone to the shops etc. I dont do anything illegal so I dont give a rats. They can even watch me jerk off through the camera if they want. I'll put on a little show If i know they're watching... make a bit of an effort, wear a costume or something
