hey all those in perth may be aware that a heap of dead snapper and other fish 12-1700+++ have washed up over last few days. Still the cause is unknown
with todays southerly wind several of me mates have seen dead whiting and herring on the waterline from scaborough to trigg.(15-20kilometres north of first seen dead fish)
Has anyone on here seen more?
how far north have people seen these fish?
In a sad development there has also been some penguins, birds and seals found dead,not sure if this is from eating the fish??

Like I said before... let's hope it's not just killing the small fish. No need for drum lines anymore, just poison the water.

"SAVE OUR SOUND" - From what?

"Come and show your support" - For what?

"Help find answers" - That's what fisheries are doing as we speak, how about we wait for the official findings before we start pointing the finger and allocating blame.

"Some one knows something" - Fair call lots of people know something, are whoever it is organising this "Rally" suggesting there is a conspiracy to hide something? Who is organising the "rally", a source would go a ways to instilling confidence in the organisers and allay scepticism of a witch hunt.

A fish kill has occurred and the relevant agencies are looking into it so what is this "Rally" rallying about?

I have a prediction what will occur at the "Rally", people will speak and point the finger at;

A. Industries located along the Kwinana foreshore.
B. The activities of the Navy at Garden Island.
C. The activities of the desalination plants.
D. International shipping using the port of Fremantle.
E. Chemtrail activities over the state.
F. Great white sharks.
Or.
G. All of the above.

Don't get me wrong I would like to know what was the cause of this fish kill but I will wait for fisheries to conduct the relevant testing and report on their findings before attending a rally demanding answers that aren't yet available and jumping to conclusions.

I live 400km away and don't kite there but when someone asked recently about suspicious run-off into the sound I did take the time to point them in the right direction. 530 people have looked at the thread, any of them that kite there pick up the phone and ring the City of Rockingham?

I am curious as to what you think a rally will acheive?

Until the rally manages to gather together a whole bunch of marine biologists, ecologists, analytical chemists and a laboratory to do some research, of course we have to leave it to others.

Is there some implication that the Govt / Fisheries are going to do nothing?
What do you suggest to fix an immediate problem when you don't know the cause of the deaths?

Well the rally against the shark cull started a huge movement and eventually the cull was stopped.
That same rally brought together marine biologists, ecologists across the globe in condemnation. So why wouldn't a rally about the sound help focus some light on whats happening

My point is why just sit back and complain that nothing is ever done or nothing ever changes. Get of your own arses and make an effort, or sit online and whinge that the conservationists are not doing enough..

when i was a young un about twenty years ago i had a job on a charter/commercial boat. One of the gigs involved taking out some scientist sort of fellas and using a claw on the boats winch to drop down to the seabed and collect sand. there would be a hundred or so samples bagged and tagged at the end of the day.
We would do this off ocean reef marina (where the sewerage outlet is ) and in specific spots for a kilometre or two around it.
The other spot was down near the garden island bridge and surrounds as there is a poo pipe that goes out their too.
I never seen the results but remember seeing that some of the sand was white and like beach sand yet other sand was a gray or almost earthy colour.
I immediately stopped surfing the waves which break off ocean reef in storms as I realised the southerly pushed all the super rich water in their.
The sewerage treatment places obviously get the solids etc out but I dont know if they test for chemicals/heavu metals etc etc.
A few years prior I remember getting the worst sore throat itchy skin from surfing ocean reef. I was only twelve or so and ended up off school for a good week.
Never really put two and two together until I did the sand testing job.......
both sewerage treatment plants are owned/run by same buisness so dare say would have same policy/procedure and or lack off...m

I think you have to remember the lab will take at least a week to culture samples to get any results and then if it's not what they first tested for it's then another week to do another test. So this could take some time to find the cause.
I hope it's nothing too permanent or far reaching though, it sounds pretty bad already.

I'm interested in the results, I wonder if they will expand the study to examine the relationship between protest marching and their effect on bacteria growth in a lab?

I was hoping they'd do a study into political donations by corporations and the lack government of oversight.

Went to go for a dive today but to rough so went to sound freedived the communal occy pots ( dunno who put the new ones in 60 mm pipe sad effort.) ill chuck some big 150mm -250mm just freedive down and tie a rope on them. ! crabs are starting to move so occy will follow ! ) caught 22 good sized squid few blue manners swimming around. Stingray or 2 No floaters in the pool Im down with eating Taiwanese ballast and **** .

Only rash was nad rash, must of got some poo particles caught in the jocks after the aqua nard but nothing 3b cream dosent fix. . The vegetation and resident marine life on the protected garden island side seems relatively good. So squid for dinner.
What ever happened my guess is it did its damaged and dispersed relatively quickly.

Its a shame to see the snapper (many breeding stock killed)and the knock on effect . Im guessing more bans in the sound on recreational fishing will follow.

But regardless what's happened Someone's ****ed up But for the future of fishing and the sustainability of the sound we need to move forward and fish for the future.

Ch9 news had the segment about canola spill. Then topped the effort off after some to and froing, indicating that its not the cause (no idea if it is or isn't, but couldn't see why).

We are upset. Everyone is concerned of course.

But normal straight thinking folks know it takes a while to figure out why they died. So why have a big angry protest demanding answers?

Its like if you feel crook and you demands your doctor prescribe a pill over the phone when he hasn't even given you a couple of tests.

Mocking the march does not indicate lack of caring about the fish dying en masse. It just acknowledges the reality of the situation.

IF they claim it was natural causes but somebody can show XYZ Pty Ltd poured galllons of poison down a drain 2 days before the fish died and the Govt deny it.... well THEN we all get frothing and have a big march.

they say that exhaustive studies are being done, so hope that includes a full suite of test, including oxygen, temp, ph, metals, hydrocarbons, pesticides etc etc in multiple locations, including sea bed soils, various water column depths
or is it just a budget constrained basic temp and ph is the exhaustive study?

i think i read they were testing for a suite of 120 trace elements, which is pretty exhaustive.
in terms of in situ testing (DO, temp, salinity, pH) in multiple locations, that is actually pretty straight forward (eg know what you are doing, hire the device, hire the boat for the day) and i would be confident they are doing them daily now at multiple locations given the spotlight. There are some pretty in depth monthly monitoring programs for cockburn sound set up by both local govs, and as requirements on the industrial bodies, that have been running for over 20 years to my knowledge and so the baseline is there to now look for any drastic change - natural or otherwise - if they have collected recent data as well.

let them do their job i reckon.

No time for scientists to do their jobs - come up with a conspiracy theory and organise a rally
