Ok go to the tip a while ago now and they have started charging for the collection of scrap steel $160 per ton .
This was introduced because steel prices dropped to $10 a ton & was stated as uneconomical to collect free & charges must now apply until steel price increases .
Well its $90 a ton now & they are still charging $160 a ton .
I think this is a massive con they now get $ 250 a ton just to drive there already loaded up bins 15km to sims metal .
Charges now apply for the recycling of paper & cardboard & green waste & plastic is not recycled anymore .
A single mattress is charged at $60 base is separate another $60
Green waste which used to be free is now $180 a ton
Yet we are all encouraged to be recycling .
So the reality is with the mining boom over we should start importing rubbish & filling these holes as its worth 3 times as much .
In germany 90% of there rubbish is recycled & the cost is not on the consumer which I believe is fair because nothing is built to last anymore everything has designed in obsolescence .
The simple fact we do not have infinite resources was the driving fact behind recycling yet now it all ends up as land fill .
.This is beyond a joke a conspiracy better than any other I've seen posted on sea breeze because this is not a theory its real & anybody can see the proof by going to the tip

Yeah, its funny. The one near me is a 'resource recovery park', but the pricing is set so that you may as well throw it all in the non-recycling section.

I am not sure there is much you can take there for free anymore. In fact, I think they are even charging for aluminium cans, which just seems incredible.

I agree that before it was better when they would accept steel for free, but now they charge so much that its hard to be bothered to separate it, so it goes in the general waste. Hardly encouraging for resource recovery.

On the upside there is a place nearer that accepts steel for free, but charges a small fee for hot water systems and the like.

I don't think its the government directly, but I think the state government awards the running of these places to companies based on the fees they will return to the government. So, any money they can make they will and part of it is to pay for the optimistic return to the government.

It amuses me when someone has to pay for something as a stand alone fee they complain that elsewhere they have a system where it's free. There's no such thing as free. At some point in the life cycle of manufactured goods in Germany that free waste disposal is paid for and you're the consumer so guess who pays? The easiest example is waste disposal at my local tip is free but my annual rates are funding the shire and the shire runs the tip and pays the wages.

I'll give you the tip actionmax, put any old crap in your recycling or green waste bin, put a few pieces of newspaper (recycling bin) or grass clippings (green waste bin) on the top , and bingo- you've got three rubbish bins instead of one.

I am an environmentalist from way back, but the way many councils are doing it (eg NSW) promotes the opposite- so why should the average punter cooperate with the lying, thieving ba5tards?

Local goverment is indeed the breeding ground for mediocrity and waste.

Now I take it &sell it myself or I've got a bloke who will come pick it up .
Its how I know scrap is paying $90 a ton again but a load of rubbish to the tip after I noticed they are still charging for steel .
Bloody thievery.

This is also my favourite gripe. I notice that, in general, fees and charges keep going up, yet services keep on coming down. Like you said, the council tip is a classic one. Having to pay for things which used to be free meant more bush dumping. I have seen it when I walked my dog.

Not only the councils, various governments also slip one in on us too. There was a website which provide daily rainfall records. It was handy for me when I was away from my property. Now that has gone too. My rates and landtax have gone up considerably over the years, way above the rate of inflation. So where are the "efficiency dividends" Mr. Turnbull and co talked about so frequently ?

This is good!! When steel was worth something you were not allowed to pinch from the metal pile. So now we can all take what we need and will be doing them a favour. Thanks local govt

Our council tip takes every thing free of charge - green waste, paint, oil, steel, asbestos, even rort iron.

That reminds me.. asbestos. With almost all houses in the fifties and probably most other decades, made of fibro with asbestos in it, you would think that the tips would be setup to take it cheaply, just so that it was disposed of properly. No. There are hefty minimum charges and its not exactly cheap. There are obviously people in our society that are going to take the cheapest way out.

There are maximum limits before you need a specialist to remove it, so to my mind this encourages dumping of something you don't really want dumped around the bush.

In Sydney, its expensive and you have to wrap securely it to make sure it doesn't 'leak'.

Down the coast a local council is offering cheaper rates for asbestos, and a much smaller minimum. To top it off, if you live in that area, they will take it either for free or a much reduced rate. It was better for me to drive down the coast than dump it locally. I am guessing that they don't get too much fibro dumped in the bush when you can dump it at the tip for free.

Are places really paying for steel now? Is it really that high? Maybe that's why they haven't been so unfriendly every time I have tried to drop some off.

I used to be able to get people to pickup scrap cars, but now, there's not much in it for them.
