Work Safe..

Has anyone dealt with these guys in the past?

I'd like to raise some issues with them. Is this practically job suicide?

Last resort. But I also like my job, and the lads I work with.

You should be able to impliment the AS safety standards without getting the bureaucrats involved.But it is your employers duty of care to provide safe working conditions .I doubt they would have a leg to stand on if they fired you for trying to uphold safety regulations.

Years ago, I had industrial accident, Workfarrt or whatever they called themselves offered a payout that I refused. Chasing several lawyers I realised my plan might backfire until the union idiot walked in one day.
Now from the time I started working I declared 'if I need someone else to negotiate my working conditions, there is no point in working there. Always found bosses happy to talk etc so fought 'non legal uninism.

Don't get me started .......ok , I'm started.
Had a random worksafe guy come into my work a couple years ago . Nice guy , no idea. He picked up on my forklift . No seatbelt . So I had to buy a seat with a retractable seat belt.
A couple problems here , if the fork is going to tip over , Id like to lean or jump the other way when it goes down . And second it's a retractable belt that needs more speed than my fork goes , to have a head on , to lock up. So unless I'm going to hit a brick wall at more than full speed , it's as useless as tits on a bull. On a rollover it isn't going to work as a seatbelt and absolutely be worse for my safety.
I ever so gingerly explained this to him and he totally agreed , He said , " I can't make you use it , but it has to be there ".
Anyway , I smiled as I didn't want to rock the boat for $160.
After that he must of felt sorry for me , there could of been actual dangerous stuff he could of picked on.

I assume the OP has already spoken to their employer?

Calling in worksafe would be job suicide I in my world, you won't get sacked for that but it won't be long before you want to leave or get shown the door for something else. Best to just find a different employer, and then maybe make a anonymous call to worksafe, if that makes you happy.

I have never voluntarily joined a union, but in my opinion what you did there was a really low act. You used a resource that is meant to be there to help people. You either join them and pay up or you don't join up and you fight your own battles. You just told us that you declared that you would fight your own battles and then jumped ship when it got hard.

You cherry picked their good nature and used their resources, effectively coming from everyone else that pays for that lawyer, and then got some money back.

Imagine if everyone had the same attitude...

by chance the last time I quit the union they wanted to know what I had done for the past two years wether I had been in the industry to sting me for more money (I left a large company and started working for myself) I told them I had left to advance my banjo playing skills.they backdated the resignation.

whs (Brisbane) are quite responsible if you recognise that they are people.
yes some of them are power hungry but they seem to be a few new recruits that are from the trade who actually have a clew. For example they snuck onsite last month 2nd day back and caught me in thongs working away they were vary good about it and turned a blind eye when I showed them the size of my foot apologise and went and put my boots on and got my swms out. We swaped phone no and he committed that they like anonymous tips.

But if you haven't made a lot of noise at work an anonymous tip would be a good idea get the contact of the bloke doing the check if you can and give him as much information as you can ect so you don't get a fine.

Or you can have the situation like here in Queensland where you can be a multi-million dollar business that can knowingly contribute largely to the death of an electrician for $137k or maybe completely contribute to the death of four members of the public (dollar value pending but the $3m seems a little low). Life is a bit cheap up here apparently
