Who's done the upgrade?
If so did you just update your old computer or spend your surfing gear $ on new computers etc?

Years ago. I can't remember when. I prefer to take upgrades as soon as they're available. Getting too far behind is when problems happen.
My PC is a Dell from 2009. It still works just fine.

If I remember correctly the upgrade was seamless and easy.

Not so easy is my machine is no longer supported since the November releases. The new maintenance upgrades won't install. I've tried everything and they just fail. I think they're up to version 1909. I need 1903 before I can proceed to 1909 but it fails. On the plus side, each failed attempt reverses itself out with no dramas.

My Macbook Air is from 2011. It chugs along quite happily too. It gets a bit of fan noise if I run too much stuff at once. I'll upgrade the desktop machine, probably with a high end Mac, and keep the laptop for browsing and reading the paper.

I upgraded my old desktop PC just before the free upgrade from 7 ended ... it hasn't worked since

Originally you could upgrade from Windows 7 or WIndows 8 to Windows 10 for free.

In fact, I think you can still do it, although its not supposed to be the case.

I use older machines at home that run it fine, but I replaced the HDD with SSD, which vastly changed the performance.

Yes you still can upgrade for free... you just aren't strictly licenced. (Activation will work with a Win7 key, even had one activate without anything to substantiate the 'claim' for a digital licence.) Personal use I wouldn't see any real bad outcomes... Business use is a whole other issue... you have effectively flagged to MS that you are using a non-licenced version

My guess is its still 'free' because M$ want you under the new OS with all the telemetry... ie you are the product.
Playing catchup with Google's dominance of data collection with Android OS.


SSD replacing a HDD is a very cheap upgrade... even with Win7 ;)

Slackware had a good version a few years back piling multi media and programming tools into it.
