Hey guys I'm kiting for few years around Gold Coast , I recently noticed with a friend with a wind reader on the beach that we actually kiting with 10/12 knots when the airport reader says 15/17 knots...is it something related with the airplane or the heat from the concrete?.. thanks

That could be related to wind generator location. Planes , mostly those with propellers do create hell a lot of wind. The farest from airport the less the wind. But there are few heli on Broadwater supplying also a bit at Marine Parade.

The airport reading will be in clean air.

Where are you standing to take your reading? Even standing in front of a sea wall or building can affect your reading.

The other thing is that the heating affect of the land near the airport will create a more volatile wind (stronger gusts)

How tall are you? Wind readings are taken 10m above surrounding terrain

You're comparing a $50 hand held device with a professionally mounted device that likely is worth $3k or more. Besides what does it matter? is the wind kitable? That's all that matters, not the numbers.

I'm with Mr milk on this one.
Whilst not actually knowing, I believe you could get a ten knot reading on the ground and at the same time a fifteen knot reading ten metres in the air

General rule of thumb is 9 metres up is 25% stronger than eye level.
