In reality it's bi-partisan, but one side claims that it's exclusively done by the other side.

Wearing a "I saved the world by going to a protest" meeting while buying a new SUV may be virtue signalling, but so is claiming that you have the virtue of being clear-minded and smarter and not fooled by Greenies because you don't believe in AGW.

My current pet example of vs is in the TP52 class yachts. They use vast amounts of materials to build high tech racing yachts, fly crews around the world, and then at regatta venues they get the locals to pick plastic up off the beach and the TP52 owners get to pretend that they are really environmentally aware. Bizarre. They would do more for the environment by freezing their yacht designs for one season.

To be fair, to many conservatives their vision IS virtuous and uplifting. They may claim, for example, that making it hard to live on Newstart will get people off their bums and into work and therefore get a better life. You or I may not agree with it - and they could just be virtue signalling with their claims - but there's probably not much doubt that many conservatives do.

I was interesting that Peter Costello's very left-wing brother thought that Peter was actually a softy but had a different vision, where the idea was to encourage people to lift their game and improve their lives. Again, you and I may think he ignored many factors but the point is that apparently he did have a vision and inspiration.
