People seem to struggle to get up to speed before the lane runs out, which is sort of funny as a lot of them drive like idiots on the freeway where speed no longer seems to be a problem, and then sit in the right hand lane until they are close to their exit

Wouldn't be quite as bad, if the tress and shrubs blocking vision on the entry to the ramps, weren't there. At least if both lanes of traffic could see each other on the approach to the ramp, it would give more time to adjust speed.
I guess that's why some people just sit in the outside lane, they don't have to avoid somebody just appearing alongside them, who's lane is rapidly running out.
My worst experience coming onto a ramp, (doing freeway speed) was emerging alongside a road train. I only had a second to decide whether to brake or speed. I went with speed, as of course there was some idiot tail gating the road train. I had to break the speed limit to make a safe entry on to the freeway.
Yeah, which is why I now think that the onramps are too short here. I looked at one the other day and there is only really a very short distance to speed up, to see what's running parallel with you, and then finally to merge. Which is probably why a lot of people don't bother.
While I am whining about other road behavior here, it makes me chuckle when you see someone way back that is flying up in the right lane, just so that they can sit up behind you. I think they don't want to go that fast, they just want to sit up behind you.
When I figured this out I started moving over as soon as I possibly could before they got there, and it confuses them. They seem to get parallel and then slow down as there is no one to hide behind. I am not sure if this is just unthinking behavior or if they want someone to be the first one if there is a speed camera up ahead.
I use 'Waze' all the time when driving towards the city, so I can see the congestion ahead, before I get to it and it amazes me the amount of people that will keep on driving fast in the right hand lane even though you can see a sea of red brake lights ahead.
