However your choice of transport the delay the other road user has caused my be less than one minute. In the scheme of things it's not that bad and the consequences of your rage may devastate you and someone else's loved ones.


Even if the fellow road user poses a risk, hang back and don't take the bait.

so we are now talking about motors on bikes.....yes they are motor bikes and should pay rego and insurance too...

.. and those old people on motorised scooters should be licensed! They sometimes fang around at faster than walking speeds, and conveniently pretend they are a road vehicle when it suits them, and also a pedestrian when it suits them. I try that once in my car, and they get all upset!

They need P plates, and speed restrictors. Sometimes I think grannies get these things so that they can get to the shops faster without the hassle of parking. I am sure they also use them to get home drunk from the bingo! Ban the lot of 'em!

Push bike riders wanted stricter laws and you got it. Perhaps if riders pushed for more safety, rego will eventually be implemented, regulation is a natural solution. Might suck but it will happen, society has proven otherwise.

You just can not argue and say its safe to ride on the road anymore. Anyone who says otherwise has rocks in their head. I use to love ridding growing up but after about 2000 to 2005 the roads just got to busy and I gave it away. Its logic to stay safe, to say anyone with a family or loved ones take a risk these day's anytime they ride on a service or main road is not a throw away line. Alot of people love a good winge about bikes especially me, but the few really do wreck it for all and now its dangerous for everyone not just the rider..

The attitude in general about bikes is really messed up from both sides. When it comes to cars and pushies we all loose and regardless of outcome we all pay lots of $ just to share....

Mr Plod told me a while back that here in W.A.,

"gophers" are governed [supposedly]

Technically - they have the same legal status as pedestrians.

They get these things - or electric bikes / trikes as no rego insurance or drivers license is needed, maintenance costs are practically nil, and if they live in a retirement village, there is usually a bus supplied for mass shopping trips or outings.

When you look at the cost of owning, regoing, insuring and maintaining a car - it adds up to a lot for a pensioner and getting rid of the car is often a necessity.

Without these annoying gophers or electric trikes - there would be hundreds of thousands of retirees driving to and from their bowling clubs at 30kph, blissfully unaware you cant get past them.

Actually that's a good idea it would get rid of all the comercial vehicles, they don't pay GST, fuel tax and anything they do pay is a tax deduction. It would get rid of half the vehicles on the road leaving more room for tax paying cyclists

Wow, a thread back from the dark-ages.

Most (or probably all) state run cycling organisations in Australia offer some sort of insurance with their yearly membership. It is a good thing to have, but I think a lot of the road-warrior type cyclists are probably not a member of these sort of cycling bodies.

Its relatively cheap, but still not free.

Going by the logic of other road users, as I pay rego, I should be able to claim on my third party insurance. I have two cars, so I should be covered twice as well ;-)

I think that you will find that that guy actually already had insurance. The court decision was just a way of getting money to the guy who was hit by the car to take care of his disabilities.
If I was the insurer, or if I was the cyclist in front who got sued, I would be appealing the decision. Not that I begrudge the guy his money. It was the guy who was tailgating the lead rider who got bumped into traffic when the front guy came up to some debris on the road, which caused him to change his line.
If you are riding in a pack, and everybody is used to it, drafting is an acceptable way to speed the pack up, but it does have its risks. One man down, everybody down. But if you want to do that in commuter traffic or beside it, you are taking excessive risk.
There are laws against tailgating in cars and trucks to stop one accident becoming a chain reaction. That's what happened here. Lead guy had a minor problem, tailgater ran into him and bounced into traffic. Not the lead guy's fault at all.
