I'm guessing that, up close, your retina can't grab the whole image in one go so your eyes flicker around scanning across the picture and your brain then attempts to assemble it...incorrectly. LOVE IT! Never assume that what you see is what there is. In many aspects of life! ; )

^^^Gratings. I think it is more to do with physiology... Then again, it is 15 years since I studied this sort of thing in my psych degree and my memory may be a little hazey...
