I have just started to fit out my house with Sonos systems and man they are pretty good. Love the access to all the old tracks I used to have and making playlists of old punk and ska stuff that u had forgotten about.

Another brilliant feature is that the kids can run their own music in the bedrooms whilst the wife and I listen to our stuff on the deck with a drink. All runs from your iPads or phones and is really easy to set up (big plus for me!).

Only downfall so far is that each unit, especially the big ones, need a power plug. Anyone know if you can get them hard wired in? The kids rooms aren't an issue but I want to mount a couple of the 5's outdoors and wonder if it would work.

Been a music buff as in systems for years, the sonos are good as in what they do but for clarity of sound you still carnt beat an amp and speaker set up, IMO they are a bit lacking in sound quality like Bose, but seem to be trendy at the moment, I looked at the system for a house I'm building and was told each zone has a hard wired amp wich costs around $750 plus speakers, but for me it's the sound quality not the simplicity

Cauncy if you still want quality get hold of the Sonos Zone Player ZP90. This little number has stereo output (or optical if you run a DAC) and plugs straight into your amp.

I have one of these and its awesome. Have also ripped all my music into FLAC format on my server. As good as CD (I'm not a vinyl apologist so happy with what I've got). Next step is to upgrade amp and speakers...

Had a demo, sorry to say I wasn't impressed, I'll stick with my bower and Wilkins and harmon kardon amp, used to have the top of the range b&o a long while back, but $19000 for a speaker set up is out of my league

I think you're missing the point...

With the ZP90 it's just like a CD player.. You can have any amp and speakers you want.

The internal DAC is ok but to really get the best out of it you can plug in an external DAC. Then the unit is simply a transport for CD quality digital signal. Hard to not like that...

Now I just need to upgrade my amp and speakers. Looking at a Denon 9 channel jobbie with Monitor Audio Silver speakers. Personally I'm not a huge fan of B&W. I find them a bit flabby in the bottom end (in the price range I can afford anyway...)

It's just like an AppleTV but 3x the price. Or 6x the price of ChromeCast. And doesn't do video. And requires its own software.
The ATV and I assume ChromeCast will play anything that you're playing on your PC or phone or laptop or tablet or whatever using only the OS itself.

I'm missing the point too. Does it do something apart from provide streaming to the device it's plugged into?
