Union site or not everyone deserves to go home there are thousands of people working in the housing industry and most have no safety officers, I hope there is a thorough investigation of the cause and if negligence then jail for those responsible fines mean stuff all.

I can't see a safety officer helping .
I'm thinking that the scaffolding is cheap import that hasn't been inspected & would fail Australian standards, the place is flooded with it now.
And just collapsed under its own weight.

A safety officer would help. Under the OSH Act they can issue a notice to the employer about anything unsafe and it has to be acted upon. By law the safety rep has to be involved in formulating all JSA's
By law the safety rep can conduct an inspection every 30 days.
All sorts of stuff.
The OSH Act makes it hard for employers and gives safety reps a lot of power.

Hey bazz how about a meme for WA Police who are NOT covered by workers comp, get sacked with NO COMPO if they are injured and can't work anymore, and under the OSH Act CANNOT refuse to do work if it is dangerous. Yeah really.

There has been a spate of scaffolding collapse up till now it's been pure luck nobody else has been killed.
Do we really have to wait & just let people continue to use sub standard scaffolding until we get a answer?
Just looking at the news shows the bottom has collapsed under its own weight.
It didn't fall away from the building.
I can tell you from personal experience that this cheap imported scaffolding is a hell of a lot thinner than the old stuff made in Australia.

Three corners away from my house we have an repeatedly dangerous intersection.
Constant crash zone .
A few weeks ago my sons girlfriend watched two bloodied children extracted from a car crash .( not so bad , blood noses and bumps ) , could have been worse .
Same , same.
If takes situations like this for change .

To become a worksafe [ vic] licensed modular scaffold-er, is a 5 day course . This means the person is legally allowed to build and supervise ,non trained laborers, in the construction of up to 35 meter high any length modular scaffold tied into the building with tube and fitting.

Its common knowledge Union sites are safer than non Union sites , and that in times of LNP governments with anti Union agendas accidents trend upwards .This is a fact how unplatable it is to you Tories on here .

After seeing some of the structures that scaffies are required to build and put their name/assurance to, i'd like to hope it gets thoroughly investigated.

If the structure/materials aren't up to scratch, scaffy or end user, people can die.

A good site foreman goes a long way to a safe site. The best site foreman are onto safety issues before they eventuate and push safety hard. Sure union sites are safety conscious but I also have been on plenty of non union sites that were very safety driven. But this is an area that i do agree that unions do a somewhat positive job and regardless of pay if I had a choice of working on a union or non union site I would choose union. All the intimidation that they do is another story.
Nobody deserves to be hurt on any site full stop so let's hope we learn from this.

Typical Tory attitude , another know all that has never been on a tube and clip drop scaffold in his life , totally out of touch , it's never to soon to discuss safety issues which cause deaths , and construction has more deaths and injuries than police work.
Good sources from that site are saying the ties were removed by other trades and the site safety officer was useless .

Sadly the riskier jobs appear to be in Transport, Agriculture and Construction where you are more likely to die on the job. This is not about unions or politics it is reducing the risk of death on the job. This is not an easy task in these more dangerous occupations. I hope all deaths could be eliminated but the statistics show otherwise for obvious reasons. Even if all reasonable steps are taken to reduce risk, then deaths can still occur. The safest course is to work in the industries lower down the chart above, presumably lower risk industries. This is not an excuse just reality.

No with the casual labor hire that's in place if you complain you go .

to many bricks up the hoist & stored on scaffolding.
I straight out don't believe that .
I worked on hoists for a few years & bricks went on & off with pallet jacks .
Because there a pallet of bricks
Just left on slab till needed & moved to we're needed with pallet jacks when needed.The majority of bricks going up the hoist are for internal walls & they don't stack them on scaffolding or u can't use the scaffolding.
If it's stacking bricks up to use off the scaffolding To brick up external wall & that's what the scaffolds there for it should be sufficiently strong enough to take the weight.

Well I'm sad the outrage over this is less than rascist Easter eggs .
