I am considering putting together a trailer with rooftop tent as a camper. Ideally it would be a box/cage trailer for all the kitchen and storage etc with the tent on top. I will be using it for kiting and surfing adventures in WA.

One of my main concerns is the tents ability to stand up to the wind? I will be chasing strong winds and most of the locations are quite bare with little protection from the elements. The hardshell/pop up ones look like they might be able to withstand the wind better but it seems like the folding canvas type are a lot more popular/common.

Also what about the various different brands? The adventure kings tent seems to be about half the price of a lot of the others is it a good option? I have no idea about the reputation/quality of various different camping brands

Any advice or experience would be appreciated, I see a lot of these tents around the place so they must be ok

James Baroud's are rated to 60+ knots and if you got a Espace Evolution you could angle the trailer easily enough to suit the wind direction.

I think the Darche ones are rated to about 45knots? The 4WDSC Kings one could be anywhere between 15knots and 50.

I made mine out of composite panels for the top of the trailer. The big advantages are . No wind issues. Easy to pack up wet. Quick set up and pack up. Tested on a WA and SA road trip. Just depends how handy you are .

Ive had one and it worked well for a while but broke and fell apart after 12 months. id suggest a big daddy swag. They are cheap , easy to set up an when u need to piss at night u just roll out the side u dont have to climb down a sketchy ladder! They can also stand strong winds depending on how u tie them down!

Both my crew have one,
never had issues, most crew are lazy and 1/2 set up , I had an arb one. The kings were identical in looks, but a 1/3 of price, an oztrail rv 2/3 is as quick to set up, I've used these in remote windy areas, again set up properly they work well, especially linking to your car awning

Any rooftop foldout camper would be fine if it has enough stays tied down to pegs. If it is on a trailer, you tend to setup more permanently so have more ropes to tie it down.

If we do Gnaraloo in a dome tent just fine., don't think you have an issue, buy anything and tie it down well.

I will check out the adventure kings rooftop tents at one of the shops around town. I think this style of tent will suit what I want.

I am actually looking to upgrade after last year's trip to gnaraloo with a pop up dome tent that was getting flattened and filled with sand in the raging south easterly

I think the Kings stuff gets a bit of a bad wrap due to customer service but my $99 awning and other 4WDSC stuff has had a heap of offroad use and i've never had a problem. They now have a couple of dealer/shops SOR so you can go have a close look.

You also have Camping4WD in Wangara who does a RTT for about the same price but his prices are really really good so it might be better value for money? I've bought lightbars, a swag, recovery tracks and Redarc gear from him and it's been all positive.

young this is exactly what i am looking to do for me and my two girls . I am looking at a half size luggage trailer and then wacking a darche HI-VIEW 2200 RTT on it as that can sleep me and the two girls easily . (5 & 7) . Then put some drawers in the back and the rest used for storage . I'll also put a fridge slide on top of one set of drawers and also put in a battery + intervolot dcdc charger and run some led lights and a small inverter . And a water tank below with a simple hand pump . and a 270 degree awning

Nice one mate that sounds like a great setup and similar to what I have been thinking of doing, I will probably keep mine simple at first and not bother with the electrics but a fridge, battery and solar panels will be on the cards for sure

Man adding solar gives so much luxury for little $$. Panel and a battery and associated wiring etc should come in under $400 but the ability to turn a light on at night, charge fridge for beers is priceless.
I used to have a little 12v converter to so I could charge my laptop as well so I could watch movies etc of a nighttime.

Best thing I ever did with my old setup.
