Yesterday was driving north on Albany Hwy ( in the right lane)

I stop at the major intersection in Maddington,with only a motorbike in front of me. Both lanes heading north and south are choc a bloc with cars.

As the light turns green the bike accelerates fast but a little slower than a normal bike.

On the other side which are heading south,around 100 / 150 metres past the traffic lights-- a few cars decide to do the right thing and leave a space for a car which wants to turn right or north out of a business.

Unfortunately,he did not see the fast travelling and smaller sized bike.

Luckily no collision------ but only missed the bike by around 10 metres max.

It can happen that quick. The motorcyclist did absolutely nothing wrong,but one mistake by the car driver and he was very nearly history or very close to it.

With no cage to protect you from the inevitable collision---- bikes are a very dangerous form of transport

As someone who has been hit by a car (whilst cycling) three times I can attest to that! (and I have the x-rays to prove it).

I now ride a hybrid flat-bar road bike and stick primarily to the paths...

Any good motorcyclist will automatically assume a right turning car on the opposite side of the road is going to pull out in front of you and is fully prepared to take evasive action.

Yeah the 530`s a weapon! The funny thing is the DOT changed the motorbike lic. laws. The 530 is learner approved here in WA.
It`s about 50hp and weighs less than 100kgs and the nutsiest dirtbike I`ve ever ridden!

A whole 10 meters! I'd be thrilled if people missed me by that much.

Agree! Same everywhere... When I ride my Mountain Bike, 95% of the riding is "OFF ROAD"!... I don't trust car drivers!


Same thing goes for my (KTM!) Trail Bike... I ride it out of town at a very slow / orderly speed, leave myself heaps of room,... Only need to travel about 1.5km to get out of town, then I do 10km on B roads... Barely see other cars... Then into the dirt... Barely see any other vehicle (period!)... I don't trust other drivers!

My rough estimate of other drivers;
90% of drivers are quite fine / OK.
7% get a little random, or are just running late, and take a few risks, or cruising and "day-dreaming" not paying attention...
3% are FULLY RANDOM! (aggressive drivers)...

I always aware that those 3% can "pop-up" out of nowhere!...

With that awareness, I have ZERO accidents... (my wife drives pretty carefully, but she's a ditzy air-head on the road, and has little bingles every 6 months, on average... - she is a very smart person though... but she's away with the fairies, daydreaming, when on the roads!)...

Yeh I had one of these - Jet black with 4 into 1's. A beast of a thing :-) :-) :-) Top fun.

But as PM33 suggests, I gave it away when I was still young with only a few minor scars to show. I dont regret it.

this is my Harley, only done 4000km in two years, including riding it from GC to TSV when I bought it. these days I prefer pedal power, takes longer to get anywhere but I enjoy it more.

When I was younger, I was the ONLY one of my motorcycling friends that didn't have a serious motorcycling accident. They all used to behave like they were in a video game, whereas I used to ride defensively all the time. (ie. go through intersections using another vehicle as a shield, constantly adjust lane position to not be in blind spot of cars, expect people to run the red light, etc.)

Even so, I can think of at least 3 times where I avoided probable death by a split second.

Anyway, if it's show and tell, here's the old rice burner - little brother to "the king". Early 80's Kwaka's were way ahead of the game at the time.

I just did a 5000k ride from qld to tassieand back and spent a week riding around down there on my big bmw adventure. I did nearly get cleaned up just south of Sydney on the Hume. Cars in front hit the brakes and swerved then a tyre appeared in the middle of the road in front. I had time to brake and swerve to the left to avoid it but when I looked to the right the car behind me was next to me. Two of us occupying the same space in the one lane. Was very glad i went left and he went right. If i was in a car he would have run up the back of me which would not be good but probably not fatal. If he hit me on the bike i probably wouldnt be posting this. There is no doubt bikes are dangerous but then getting out of bed everyday is perilous as well.

Ps Tassie is an awesome place to ride bikes.
