I have been looking at buying a new vehicle and am finding the process rather tedious and difficult in the current environment.

Recently, I made an appointment at a local dealership at 10:00am on a weekday and was kept waiting until 10:35am by the salesman, then after test-driving the demo model, I sat down to do the deal and couldn't even get a set of car mats thrown in. To make matters even worse, I was told that I would have to wait 8 to 10 months for delivery! Also, I was being quoted full MSRP with NO trade in. I couldn't take it anymore, and walked out.

I have heard similar stories from others who are also trying to update their car or truck.

I am thinking about using a buying agent such as Kogan carsales. Has anyone had any experience with them or any other buying agent?

Your story is common and is not going to get better anytime soon. Toyota have announced they are cutting production by 40% due to chip supplies. I would assume all manufacturers face same problems.

Second hand 4x4s brought before covid are selling for nearly as much as they were bought for originally

16" steelies are coming back, hope he threw them in the tray for you? Ford Melville has a low km Suzuki Jimny with $42,995 on the window! Less than 30k brand new. Not that they've sold it yet.

Apparently a factory that made these chips for just about all cars had a fire . A $2 item that has stopped almost all production . There back on it , but there is now a 8 month wait .
So im told .
We just got in before this chip problem . Last batch before a 10 month wait .
New cars are so rare now and people will pay full price with no freebies. Second hand stuff is so expensive now . Just have a look at second hand landcruisers
If you could wait a year , there will be heaps of cars on the market , all at once . Then they will be begging you to buy , probably get a free bluey for the back of the Ute .

Yet, renew your car insurance and have a look at how woeful the 'market value' is.

I was talking with a furniture salesman at Nick Scali recently. He was telling me how he used to be a car salesman and knows how the game works. He too recently tried to buy a Hilux SR5 and pretty much got the same treatment that I got. He also ended up walking away from the deal. Still hasn't got a new car....

Maybe, I will just go ahead and order a Tesla. No salesmen, no haggling or very long wait time.

My hire car in Poland was a little Skoda. Great car. The speed limit is 140 there but everyone sits on 160, and that little machine was stable and comfortable. I'd buy one in a heartbeat

I had a old Volvo for a few years . Great car . Never a problem . Best turning circle of any car , even though it was station wagon . Full length mattress in the back with room of a small esky at the feet .Only problem was the Volvo stigma. Everyone had to pass me no matter how fast I was going .
Now it would be a super cool car that my daughter would love to own .

I just bought a car and about 300kms in the lights came on like a Christmas tree. Water coming out exhaust. Dealer says not covered by statutory warranty though I did purchase extended warranty from dealer.
Are they obliged to fix problem instead of band aid solution?

Second hand car warranty are worth ****.
Bought a dodgy car with said warranty and back shocks leaked . Went back and guy said shocks are not under warranty because I could have towed overweight . I said there is no towbar . He said , I could have put one on and then taken it off .

It was blowing smoke and using oil.
Took it back and same dodgy bloke said unless it's using more than 500 ml oil per 100 km it's not a problem .

500 ml per 100 km would be worse than starting up a cold two stroke dirt bike . Constantly .

Did you follow up with Consumer Protection?

Yes whatever you do don't get extended warranty. We mistakenly ticked the box once and I went thru the fine print. The most astounding thing in the fine print was that up to 85% of your warranty payment goes in commission to the dealer who sold you it! They don't plan to need to use much of your money in actual repairs. I didn't test it out with a claim. I just demanded a refund and got it without any resistance.

It's also so that VWs can pass emission tests.

Ring up one of the country dealers- it might be hard to test drive, but they are way easier to deal with and same price straight up as city dealers with out all the bull****e!

What car were you trying to buy? (and where?)

When I bought my transit new about 10 years ago I ordered it & was told that I could get one off the next boat coming in 6 weeks but if I wanted it customised I would have to wait at least 3 months for the next boat.
So I said cool just go standard get me one off the next boat.
12weeks later I ring up & ask we're is my transit to get told & this is fair dinkum I couldn't make this up .
Theres been a delay the ship has been held up by strong tides & won't be here for 3months .
I said alright you didn't get the order in & I'm waiting for the next boat but she insisted that it was the next boat but extremely strong tides were delaying it for 3 months.
I just hung up I was pissed right off .
The fact they never rang & told me about the delay and for trying to treat me like an idiot.

We ordered a new/replacement car back in March, after a pretty decent stack that probably should have called us all quits.
I knew about the display driver IC global shortage, and understood there was a delay.
But for other reasons was blissfully unaware of the other significant flooding/fires etc that were ravaging the opposite side of the globe.

20+ people drowned in a train due to flash flooding the weekend after I had just phoned the dealer to get an update, so yes I did feel like a (your choice) knob/twat/inconsiderate ...
The car is still not here, and has been 'in paint' for about a month (eta now November if we are lucky), but its pretty much a first world problem by comparison.

For many reasons, there truly is bugger all stock anywhere.
Add to that the blow out cost of shipping virtually anything from anywhere, I think this is the new norm for along time ahead.

I did consider the Skoda Kodiaq RS 4x4
However, now there is news of the Tesla Model Y coming in the next few months. No more 'dealer experience' no more servicing and no more petrol stations....

New Dmax Xterrain at the dealership M1 Exit 66

Have you gone to their websites, done the ring around? I went to 2 other dealerships who told me October for the colour/spec I wanted and weren't willing to negotiate at all. Found the car I wanted in stock at Titan and did a good deal. If you hunt around a bit there is some stock out there.
Those x terrains are already discounted aren't they? Unlikely to get any further cash off.
Its been in the news that Isuzu are having long wait times, I'm surprised you weren't aware
