The jogger made her way gracefully along the beach at Scarborough. It was a balmy summers afternoon and she revelled in the beauty of the beach and the soft evening breeze. Passing a metal sign she increased her pace slightly as she passed smoothly through the assorted bathers and other joggers enjoying the beach with her. The dog struck moments later. Matching her speed easily it hurled itself at her neck dragging the girl savagely to the ground where it tore at vital veins and arteries until with a groan she died in the sand. Witnesses quickly called the authorities and in minutes rangers had closed the beach and were seen herding the dog away from the body and further up the beach. A bystander approached the Rangers and looking puzzled said. " Aren't you going to put the dog down? It obviously is a threat to other people. It has already killed someone. Herding it up the beach won't achieve anything. It will just return after you have gone." The Ranger shook his head. "Nah mate" he said. "It is the dogs environment. See that sign? It says DOG BEACH. When you enter the dog beach it is you that is invading their territory. And anyway. Millions of dogs are killed and eaten in Asia. No, we will just herd it up the beach until night fall and when we can't see the dog anymore we will go home. Then in the morning we will open the beach again". The bystander looked at the Ranger shook his head and said. "Mate. You're a fool".

the police officer searched the deceased body, looking for identification and sneeking a cheeky feel while the body was still warm..

there was no wallet, but when the officer lifted the young joggers shirt to check out the deceaseds ample bosom he came face to face with enough c4 strapped to the dead joggers chest to blow up a bridge...

damn dog turned out to be a hero

Personally I wish they could isolate the individual shark involved in any attack - fatal or not - but that's pretty much lottery odds.
Unfortunately it's more of a case of

"Anyone seen the dog?"

"Nah, it buggered off into the scrub, where 20 dogs that look just like it came out from, and we have no idea which is which."

"Well the papers will be all over us so we have to hand something over.."

"Why don't we bait one with a nice steak on a fishing line, knock it on the head and then we will be able to show we've done something."

"Great idea. Does fk all to protect the next jogger but I'll be glad to have the papers off our case."

Exactly. Dog attack is not comparable to shark attack. Apples and oranges.

There are very few dogs left in the wild, at the rate that certain countries massive fleets of dog catching craft are catching them, cutting their legs off, and throwing them back in the bush to die slowly & painfully (while all their yummy dog meat is wasted)

How about this one.

We all live on a Island, we live in peace and harmony and we all share the only Fresh water supply evenly. Obviously that fresh water supply is important to everyone but maybe not all can see the bigger picture. For what reasons i don't understand, because as humans we only need a few basic items to survive. Food, fresh water and oxygen. Well lets say a young baby crawls away from his mother and falls into that fresh water supply of water. Sadly the baby drowns and obviously everyone in the community are deeply saddened and feel helpless to be able to stop the situation from occurring again.

But a few load and boisterous hogans who want to beat there chest and make a name for themselves, they say "We can fix this problem" We will stop it ever happening again, because after all, we are Human Beings. We are the smartest, most important thing on this island. Well there proposal is to fill in the fresh water supply What should the rest do, just sit back and let the bogans ruin life for everyone else? Or stand up for the environment that provides us with more than just a little bit of fun on a board

To continue the analogy,.
Stand up for the environment!
If it's known lots of babies are drowning there, fence off their access to the pool and do it fast.
Otherwise the bogan extremists will get their way and the pool WILL be removed.

Can't you see that jbhack? If we continue to waste money and resources on this while achieving nothing, eventually the tide turns and we end up with the other extreme.

So your answer is to ban surfing then Keep people away from any danger. Or just accept the consequences of your ADULT actions

That would be better than keep on doing the same thing, and just winging when you feel a little frightened..How do you manage to drive to work daily? Aren't you terrified that you might die in a car crash

I left this one on its own because you see thats what I'm scared of..If we kill down all the Great White sharks what will happen then Do you know

What if we then have Bull sharks exploding in numbers Thats what i think will more than likely happen. I feel for Reunion. As they are dealing with a very different charm problem than ours. Bull sharks

What i would like is.

Any money used to provide better education. Like lettings us know if a shark is detected. Weather its the same shark or not. More studies into products like shark shield, Or Katana's system. I actually like the idea of shark proof swimming areas. I'd also like to see fisheries get out and do there job. Stop people feeding sharks of there boats for fun and 5 minutes of film to sell to the TV stations. Id like to see a better spotter system implemented. A system that is Computer driven can run up and down our coast for Aprrox $300000. Not the existing millions the chopper costs that only will detect 17% of sharks.

Id like to see some sort of research being done. At least a attempt at a count would be nice. Then that info released to the public. It would be nice if WA fisheries worked in with other states, or bodies involved in shark research, instead of keeping it all in house and closed hand.

I'd like to see a system like Shark alarm supported and used to help roll out real time warnings. Hell i'd even be happy to just have SLSWA not to lazy to update Face book. Personally i don't see any of this too much to ask. Do you

I get scared of people not starving dogs... at least I know dogs who are on the SW tip of Australia are there for a feed usually after crossing the barren great bight and before travelling on to South Africa.

People will king coward hit for no reason... anywhere.

What exactly is it you want the dogs to do... go to Coles and pickup some Tuna? It's not like there's much fish left in the ocean. or just die and let us have some more fun.

When I die I'm donating my body for fish food... screw the donor card.

If I thought for one minute it would solve the problem I would go along with it,.. but,..
it will not stop the problem, and in fact it will only make a small dent in it at best.
It will also be very expensive and,
It will also take many years to get up and running, and
it is doubtful that it would ever by properly set up because there are too many factors involved, all of which would be endlessly argued over by all those wanting to get a bigger share of the money / action..

The end result would be more truckloads of money spent for zero effect.

Most of the attacks happen away from where all the spotter planes and safe swimming areas would be operating,
like Lancelin, Wedge, Cowaramup Bay, Margaret River, Rottnest, Esperance, Albany,.. sooo many places.
It would have an effect on Perth Metro beaches only, but still not totally eliminate the problem.

And again,.. I am NOT suggesting that "we kill down all the Great White sharks" as you say.
I am suggesting we kill the very few that attack people.
I am also suggesting however, that if we don't kill this small number, then public opinion will swing so far as to demand they all be killed.
That's the way it works and that's where we are heading.

Jbhack, not what I meant at all.
The suggestion to fence off the area was to stop BABIES drowning.
Adults can swim and make their own assessments as to the danger, and so jumpt he fence if they so choose.
However, aftger jumping the fence they have a right ot expect that any and all simple actions to make the area safe have been taken.
No bear traps in the water, no slat water crocs, etc.
If it turns out that the authority has not even taken the most simple and cheap precaustions to make the area sfe then they are at fault.
That is what we have here.
I didn't choose the analogy. I only continued it on a bit.
Don't take it too far because it doesn't entirely fit.

It used to be safe to surf - it is not safe anymore in WA, at least during winter and spring. There were no fatalities from shark attacks in WA between 1925 (Tiger shark fatality Cottesloe Beach) and 1999 (Ken Crew killed at North Cottesloe Beach). That's 74 years!

Since then we have had 11 fatalities in WA. There seems to be a lot more sharks and more really big sharks.

A question for the anti cull brigade, during the 74 years was the environment any worse off with less Great Whites? If the answer is no, why not thin their numbers a little? Allow sports fishing for GW Sharks a couple of months a year. Manage the fishery like we do with Crayfish and Pink Snapper.

The sharks are clearly not endangered. Personally, I value human life way more than the life of a fish, albeit a very large and majestic fish.

I want my three kids to be able to surf, swim, dive and kite in safety.

Ill answer it but it will do no good i guess. The scientists are all ready saying shark numbers are critically endangered. Now it seems that the Experts that now it all (a few precious surfers) say thats not the case. There must be more than ever because we are seeing more. The same people won't take into account that more people are using the waters than ever before.

So a question for those that say there is more sharks today.

If in a 100 acre savannah had a 1 acre water hole. Around that water hole there is 5 lions is it fair to then say well if you take the entire 100 acre and times that number by 5 does that mean theres a good chance that there would be around 500 lions in that region? Or could it be far to say that nearly all the predictors in that area they would all be around that water hole. Were the food source is

So who is right the guy that says lets kill a few, after all there MUST be at least 500 out their.. But what is there actually isn't. That all the scientists are saying actually there is a very real chance your looking at the last 5 alive Well thats how i see the Ocean.

Who would prefer to aliment great whites, but then have to deal with Bull sharks..? Or Aggressive Squid..? Or eventually hoards of Jellyfish..? These are all the what could happen if we wipe out the GW's, well thats what the scientists say

Oh and for those that say lets just kill a few, if there are so many anyway, what will killing a few achieve NOTHING..

Common sense dictates that there is no way of measuring with any degree of accuracy the numbers of White Sharks in the oceans. Scientists who state otherwise are having a lend of us.
All we have, as I see it is anecdotal evidence. This anecdotal evidence is clearly pointing toward a massive increase in shark numbers.

Any stats can be used to back up ones ideas. Ever thought that maybe in that time, the populational growth of Perth could of contributed to the likelihood of an increasing chance of being attacked? How many surfers would have been in the line up back then compared to now particularly when you consider a place like Margaret River where people have now flocked to to live. Humans are naturally inclined to fear the worse and protects one self but we have to see the bigger picture. I just wished people would keep a level head and the government would do something smart about all this rather than pour money down the drain on colored wetsuits or using bubbles and speakers to 'scare off' sharks.

Culling may not be the answer but most definately leniency or allowing a quota for great whites to be fished should be. Maybe increase the frequency of patrols and efficiency of rescue teams? The government has a lot to answer to and so far has not. The media also needs to back off sensationalising everything.

The whole 'more people in the water' thing is total bs.

The population has increased, has the number of car accidents increased?
Yes.
But what about the percentage of accidents to population size?
Pretty sure you'll find that it hasn't.

Statistics are statistics.

The numbers of attacks and fatalities are much greater than would be statistically accounted for by more people in the water.
