I have used these to get some really good and cheap glasses. But the question I have is if you try on your favourite sunnies and want to get the lenses converted to your prescription, is there a company online that does this?
Paying over $600 for a $149 pair of sunnies (Arnette in this case) from your local Luxottica franchise just because they put in prescription lenses (single vision) is a bit hard to swallow. So if anyone has done this and has some tips, it would be appreciated.

We've literally saved $1000's by using Zenni.

Have you thought of ordering some from Zenni that have a larger lens, then getting to work with a Dremel?

no experience with zenni but I have Rudy Project with clip on prescription lenses. This works great as they are regular sunnies and can still swap lenses if I want to. I use them for cycling and driving (not water sports).

The prescription lenses are clear and I think that is much cheaper than prescription sunnies. Mind you Rudys are not a cheap brand....

Be careful - not all sunglass frames will fit prescription lenses - especially if they are very curved, wrap around frames. I have Tonic Rush - copper photochromic, polarized, perscription . Not cheap when you don't have any health cover but I can't windsurf or be on the water without them.

Maui Jim's. End of story . The best. Like a whole new world . Seriously I even sometimes use them watching the tv (they are prescription ). They just make colours so much more vibrant

Yep Maui Jim are great, I've been using them for 20 years and the backup service is off the planet.

Last year I forgot that I had my sunnies on my hat when I swatted a fly , with my hat, as a bit of a tongue in cheek attempt I sent the pair of smashed frames and scratched lenses off to Maui Jim in Melbourne to ask if they could repair them. They were still under warranty at the time and in no time I had a new pair of sunnies from them.

There were a few other incidents with the same result, but that one took the cake.

yes great glasses but the weak point on mine are the arms , broke near the hinge ..try getting parts ..not happening ... note ..Sun Glass Fix have replacement lenses for most brands ..anyway back to my 30 buck cancer council models ...

Opticians that sell Maui Jims. I believe they are sent to Italy where most sunglass lens are made. Have used Maui Jims for years,Just the best.

I'm not sure that Sunglass Fix sell genuine replacement lens.

I use prescription safety glasses with a tint, needed them for work so employer paid for some I have used or claim back on tax return. Ones I am using at the moment have transitional lens's so if its overcast or out late or early they adjust to available light. Use maui Jim's when not out in the water.

Also nose bit are free for life ,the arms have a great warranty and I have received free arms after two years out of warranty . So I do find that comment hard to believe

Are you talking your local little optician or one of the big companies? Just seems like $450 plus just for the prescription side on top of the price of the sunnies is pretty steep.

My daughter is an optometrist though, in a small private optom practice so I have an insider veiew also
They sell the more $$ brands, inc MJ, and I'm still on my first pair.
All of the aftersales service comments are 100% spot on, much better than previous Ray Bans, Oakley/ Bolle crap from teenage years etc.

Just from seeing things on the other side of the fence, i'd be really considering about saving money on prescriptions, or even going to the big name franchises. Basically the optoms get run like any business, with max number of patients to be seen per day, meaning short appointment times and pump patients through. This means testing isnt always as thorough, and there is stuff that can just get missed. But its not always the case.
If youve spent decades on the water, in the sun, beach etc, , eye health is pretty important. In only her 3rd year out, she has has picked up some patient conditions that have been missed, and stuff you dont want to let go untreated thats seriously not good.
Knowing what I've learnt now, find a good optometrist you trust that know their beans and stick with them.

I'll save money on cheap beer/shoes/haircuts and sails before considering scrimping a few hundred on glasses.
One final tip to make up for the preaching: any good optom place has a you beute bead hot bath thing. Looks like an ultrasonic parts washer, but filled with jelly bellys. Drop your frames in and they heat up, and you can bring the arms in a little tighter, to make them snugger. Great for when you look down on the boat into the water without fear they are going to end up in the drink, and usually dont just about free of charge if you ask nice.

Do MJs do non polarised? Are there any pilots here that can offer suggestions for great script sunnies?

Not sure of your intended end use but I have these for windsurfing secured by a strap which can be swapped out for normal arms.
Note you are in Qld so Redcliffe may be accessible for you.

This is a modular system. Get the prescription made up. It comes as an insert. Put it in the frame. Crack or break a frame , buy new one for$30 and put prescription in it. Can also interchange lenses , darker , lighter etc. I've replaced all parts except the prescription over the last 5 yrs at minimal cost. They may have other options , best to chat with them.
