Have no issues with blokes surfing after a shark sighting/scare although not a fatal. Occy nice bloke, legend in surfing world, frotha, man grom...however he turns up on local news tele tonight showing how "brave" he is getting back in the water and how it's their territory (which i agree) which brings me to.Would Occy surf a day after if Fanning was taken? First fatal at your home break show a little respect..nope nevermind go surf 2ft wind affected slop with smaller crowds. The crowds are not scared Occy they are honouring the loss of a fellow surfer at their home break even if he was not a true local local. No-one should have surfed that point/s today. Sad response from our "icons"

The bloke that died was a true surfer/waterman, he would NOT have wanted people to stay out of the water.
He would have wanted every surfer out catching a wave in his memory. Thats what any true waterman would want.

I bet if you asked Fanning or Occy if they were killed by a shark would they want/expect all surfers to stay out of the water in respected, I bet they would say " No, that would be the opposite to what we would want". Every real surfer would want their fellow brother surfers to go out and catch a wave in their honor, not stay out of the water.
I got out on the water today in respect.

A bloke died from a shark at my local and I went surfing the following day.

I meant no dissrepect and I wasnt trying to look tough either. Actually i was nervous as fk but i wanted to get back in the water and face my fears as soon as possible cause I didnt want the noahs to mess with my head too much and wreck the thing I love doing most of all. I figured getting straight back out there was the best way, for me.

I didnt enjoy the surf much, every little spalsh or shadow freaked me out. But the next surf after that I managed to chill out and start to enjoy things.

I think of that bloke and the people that witnessed the attack every time I surf there.

Sometimes disrespect is previeced but not intended.

Well they cancelled a jbay and margs event over just a scare let alone a fatal, pretty sure Mick got on the first flight home ;) That said i understand and appreciate we all have different takes on how we respond to this -just wish Occ had a better choice of words this morning. I think you saying no one should have surfed today out of respect is, well, disrespectable.

Need to enforce a stage 4 lock down of all surf breaks

Probably a little off-track in making my point but granted "no-one surf" was probably not the right wording, but like tipping out a beer was my take - let a few waves roll by unridden. Just quickly, completely subjective on how we show our respect so not buying into the any real/true surfer would go out the next day, albeit i'm sure there's plenty. Point is people went on with their day, including Occ, like it was a M1 fatal - didn't sound like it concerned him at all - i'll leave it there

This link has photos of occy at snappers, nice enough waves.

Best time I have had at snappers was waves about this size, the locals weren't as interested in the little waves and the water was too cold for them at 19?, so it was quiet.
