Anyone know where I might be able to get myself a tank of pure oxygen?

Doing a filmclip for a song that will require me to stay underwater for the duration of the song. Can make it without oxygen but oxygenating the blood stream before should increase my capacity by 30%...means that I can do it a little more comfortably...

You can buy bottles of oxygen or rent them, but are you sure you know what you are doing?

I thought pure oxygen was not a good idea, and there is a reason that scuba tanks have a mix.

I have NFI if its a good idea or not but Supagas in Welshpool are easy to deal with and should be able to help you. They sell all sorts of gasses

Pure oxygen can easily be toxic if you mess with it. from a theurepeutic point of view it's good stuff, but trying to snort as much as you can before trying to hold your breath underwater sounds dodgy.

Besides, carbon dioxide build up is a primary trigger to breathing, not your oxygen saturation (or lack of).

but if you really want to do it try and get your hands on an oxi-viva, at least it will have the necessary hardware. Might also be handy after...

Ring 000 or 911 im sure they have plenty of oxygen and a bailout plan on standby.

See a lot of this stuff on utube can be fatal with-out the correct support and training .

That's why I suggested the oxy-viva Buster, it has more value after then before, it might buy a few minutes waiting for the green bus

edit- and at least it will be medical oxygen, not industrial.

Oxygen is toxic at partial pressures above 2 bar! If you don't understand what this means then you shouldn't be messing with it...

Can you not film it in managble stages then edit?

Grab some hydrogen peroxide from the pharmacy
Chuck in it a catalyst like
bleach or
catalase (chopped up livers will have enough of that enzyme) or
any metal oxide, it think manganese dioxide is the classic

..............and it will release oxygen.
Just do that and breathe close to that sh!t and you will be in an O2 rich environment dude

Or easier, get a plumber friend. .......he will have an oxy-acetylene set, turn on the pipe and suck awa,,,,,,,,, The black cylinder, not the red one.



But anyway, good luck with the singing underwater (which seems to be more of a technical issue than the duration of the underwater stint)
but you do know you can do a number of takes and put them all together, like in The Abyss the actors were not actually underwater for 120mins

Do yourself a favour and film it in three takes.

As mentioned above - toxic and can be deadly. With that in mind, most dive shops refill tanks with the correct mixture and can check/refill pure oxy tanks. Have a chat with them as they will explain the dangers face-to-face.

The shoot will be at 2m depth - not 10m so partial pressures will not be an issue. The intention would be to breathe 10 minutes prior to filming - not to actually dive on it; nor trying 'to snort as much as possible'.

To allay any fears, I'll have two commercial divers on the support boat with 50 years of diving experience between them and who have written procedures for diving on mixed gases (one of which is my old man). The cinematographer is a qualified clearance diver (he's currently overseas so can't get in touch with him to ask him where I can get supply).

And if you're interested in breath hold and free diving, there's plenty on the sport. Try googling Static Apnea.

^^^ In that case, those experts can train you to hold for 4-5mins with no need to have o2 beforehand.

Kinda silly to put up here - answers are better coming from those in the know.

one thing that may be of assistance to all reading this is breathology, have a look its changed my life I watched a couple of the intro vids and been practicing breathing teqnichues. There is a lot to know, at first i was sceptical but the more I have done the bigger waves im more comfortable in. Next thing is to stop smoking prior to paying for the full course (first online training ive ever entertained paying for)
Do yourselves a huge favour and at least google it.
In regards to pure oxygen if you breathe it prior to freediving for saturation purposes it will extend your time underwater substantially, however the chance of shallow water blackout and brain damage is also greatly increased.
If you will be on scuba gear after breathing oxygen this greatly affects nitrogen absorption and increases chances off toxicity. Whichever path you choose to take please approach with caution and ensure adequate support is available.
pure oxygen can be bought from medical suppliers,however some research is recommended prior to going down this path, alternitavely have you entertained the use of a hookah system ?

Just get Dave Gleeson to do it for you. He seemed to manage it okay in the film clip to Shivers.

If you have access to all that knowledge why get on here and ask in such a manner that makes you sound like you have no idea? Google would have given you an answer quicker than here, or were you just trying to drum up curiosity and awe at your little project?

in a past life i was a scuba instructor.
how long and how deep are you going?
if its just your head under the water use a snorkel or *borrow scuba gear. if its less than a meter the tank will last ages.
BUT

*if its deeper than that, then that's where you need to get trained in how to use scuba and how it effects the body.
it can be very dangerous if you are not trained.
why not sign up for an open water scuba course, then you will be able to film safely and actually learn a new skill.
all the serious replies are good info for you, especially take note of oxygen toxicity

I know one thing,. the urge to breath does not come from low o2 in the system, it comes from CO2. So to get better bottom time you need to learn to switch of you CO2 receptors.

i could do 5min 10sec back in the day. Was much fitter, younger and dived every day.
its all about chilling out and relaxing. Being at one with yourself grasshopper!
just watch out for shallow water blackout. scary sh!t

I loathe the fact that I am actually going to respond to this at all.

My SINCERE apologies - I didn't realise that failing to disclose information about the project and my personal background (including scuba diving experience, free diving experience, family's commercial diving experience, how many times I take a **** a day) would cause an emotional meltdown of Hiroshima size proportions.

Further apologies to the forum 'locals' who menace this site and felt that my original post threatened the very fabric of society; the same people that have had nothing better to do every week night for the last 10 years of their lives than throw their two cents in on every topic even if they don't actually have anything constructive to say / have any idea what they're talking about.

To calm some of the emotive few amongst you, the following is what I 'obviously' should have disclosed to you in my original post but failed to do so in my haze of cold and flu tablets (which I should probably disclose that I was taking for influenza symptoms).

Yes, I do have a scuba ticket - albeit I did it 16 years ago as a 14 year old.
Yes, I am aware that breathing pure oxygen can be dangerous where partial pressures come into play.
Yes, I am aware that the urge to breathe is caused by a build up of CO2 in the bloodstream.
Yes, I am aware of shallow water black out.
Yes, I have been training for static apnea for a few months now; unfortunately not very consistently - I am currently at 3.10.
Yes, I am aware and have read up on breathology.
Yes, I am aware that free diving at depths after breathing compressed air (irrespective of type of gas) AT DEPTH (ie scuba diving) is dangerous.

BUT

No, I am not diving at depth with compressed oxygen.
No, I am not diving at any depth that partial pressures would need to be considered.
No, I am not diving on compressed air before attempting the static apnea.
No, I am not actually doing anything with compressed air in the water.
No, I won't actually be 'singing' underwater - I am miming to the song. And yes, there will be an underwater speaker so I'm miming to something.

And n,o I do not feel it necessary to call people, my folks included, after 830pm. In hindsight, it would have been a hell of a lot more constructive if I had. The oxygen thing is an afterthought.

Thank you to all the people that actually contributed to this post - all 2-3 of you. I am excited about the release and hopeful that it gets some traction!

To the rest, I am suspecting that you will pick this post to bits because you have nothing better in your lives than an Internet forum.
