Just watched a very cool Mexican movie called Roma. If anyone else out there remembers Wim Wenders movies, you'll love it.
Alfonso ...something-or-other/mexican name also did
Children of Men, and
Gravity.
A lot of people get bored with
Roma and turn it off after 20 minutes, but that is just the film setting the initial pace and setting. Their loss, it's the best film I've seen in years. It'll stay with you for days.
The first act is all very real, mundane. It sets a pace, setting, and the characters. It only changes from there (and gets
very dramatic). Oh, and it's entirely in black and white.
I can see why this might not hold the attention of an audience raised on comic book superheroes (****).
But Alfonso is
a master of slowly, slowly raising the tension. Here's that single, 4 minute shot from
Children of Men that is a quick example o how he does the same over an entire film like
Roma, or even
Gravity (has to be seen at movies in 3D)
