If you want Netflix then that's a bit easier and cheaper. Netflix Australia started last week. We have signed up to the $12 a month plan.

I'm hoping Netflix makes Foxtel a little (lot) more honest. I signed up to foxtel late last year forgetting why I ditched them in the first place. If Foxtrl don't pull their finger out, then I'm jumping ship.

Moby, saw that at work today (supposed to be working) let out a big lol by accident which was a bit sus. Funny stuff.

As for Netflix, it's awesome. I'm with iinet so it's unmetered. Been using it a week solid and not a single streaming glitch. So much good stuff there. I'm sold.

I've been watching netflix for about two years through unotelly and will keep it that way even though it costs me little extra for unotelly subscription and it's metered. The Australian version of netflix currently has only 40-50% content of the US version. I think they plan to make more movies and shows available in the future as they get the broadcasting rights. Unotelly has a free trial and it's pretty easy to set up in case you want to see the difference in what is available in the US vs here

thx gs12 I never bothered going US netflix due to ease of channel BT & being totally free, however due to a bunch of things inc kickass rolling on dcma, plus imminent 3 strikes / etc I think netflix is the go. Now that I'm using it, it is actually easier, however I wish you could stop it showing categories (like 2nd one down is 'romantic movies' which are always on the screen, urg) and have a 'never show me this again' button.

As extra content, spokesman did say 'this is only the starting catalogue, check back after a month, 3 months, 6 months etc'. I think they intend to build it to rival US content.

Problem would be going metered - have to spend more on bandwidth!. Plus monthly unotelly/unblockus/etc. Plus monthly VPN. Kinda adds up.

What speeds do you need for uninterrupted streaming Dave. I've heard the speeds have radically reduced since Netflix. I'm with iiNet as well, but to be honest I haven't noticed much drop which makes me think my speeds were probably on tne low side anyway.

My speeds aren't great I believe. Pretty up and down. I'm used to cable and since moving house I noticed a bit of a drop going to ADSL. I'm 6km from exchange on adsl (2+?) which I'm told is pretty far and can be slow. Connection maxes out at download of around 500k/sec at the best of times. I can run a speedtest tonight.

Netflix seamlessly lowers pic quality as bandwidth drops. I chose the $12/m HD option and normally I've noticed pic quality is really really sharp, better than I'd normally download, however 1st show I watched wife & I noticed 1 30 sec scene was blurry - but thought it might have been a camera affect..

First month is free so you can try it and cancel without spending anything I think.

Some tips for new Netflix players.

Its worth getting a service like getflix or unblock us as then you can change your netflix region on demand. The different regions all have different content. I think I was using argentina last as that had season one of Adventure Time when the UK/US region only had season 2 onwards? Weird.

www.moreflix.com is your friend. You can search tv and movies and it will tell you which Netflix region its available on.

But we don't need an NBN because that's only for people that download movies. Me? I pay $1,000,000/month to watch ads on Foxtel or get my entertainment from the local Blockbuster/VideoEzy store. The internet is just a fad.

This is me right now, for what it's worth. I've also been finding evenings maybe congested in the last week - affecting internet not netflix tho.

Guess I can't complain too much. I heard you needed a min of 8Mps for Fetch and thought Netflix would've been the same

Use a VPN etc and you can access any region of Netflix you like. Use moreflicks.com to search for specific content...

Get a VPN that encrypts your traffic and they can't sniff it... Can they?

If you go here you can see what's added. So each day they're adding around 50 things ?!?! Yesterday's notables were Weeds and Merlin I guess..

Netflix is only for city sleeker!I am 16 Km out Katherine NT and all we can get is the old Foxtel by satellite........ In my house i get 3G some time No much sailing and windsurfing there as well but fishing is awesome (so I have been told)...... just mind the crocs!

Probably both as "illegal" as each other? But if you had a VPN you could either sign up to netflix USA and pay for their content without any issues or you could continue to download stuff illegally and our govco, with their new metadata laws, can't ping you.

Not much longevity in Netflix AU having a huge catalogue of shows that are 3-5 years old if they don't show current US series at the same time.

What Australian law are you breaking if you are caught diddling your regional netflix settings?

I've been using the US version of netflix for a couple of months. There's so much crap on there, it takes 20 minutes to scroll through everything to find something worth watching.

Seven times the amount of crap than on the Aussie - watered down - version.

Brings channel surfing to a whole other level.
