Hi guys, I'm 32 years old just secure an apprenticeship 90km far from my house. I'm just scared is it right move to pack my whole house and relocate close to my work even though I bought the house I'm living in. What if it doesn't work out and I have to come back to old job??? Just need some motivation. Thanks

first question to ask, is it close to water, surf, wind. ie, can I live there and not go insane?

Yes I live in west Melbourne and place I got job at eastern suburbs. I have full time job here is warehouse and making around 80k for last 10 years. Just got bored didn't like it anymore willing to change my career, ending up gettting apprenticeship in plumbing. Scared what if I fail and lost in last. My family is not supportive much. ??

Why not rent your house out & rent somewhere close to the new job? Then if the apprenticeship does not work out you still have your home.

If you own your house in Vic you could retire and buy three properties in Qld.

family not supportive much, ...wife & kids? or older family.
If former does wife have a job close by?
are kids happy with school & friends?
Can you get a house to rent close to work? will the rent be less than when you rent your house out?

I admire and applaud you for this bold step, we can give our thoughts but its your decision.

Ah young man life is full of unknowns and what ifs. The older you get the more you learn to live with the unknowns. Go for it - as some of us can attest - it goes fast. So give it a crack and see what happens. There is a risk reward scenario in every decision and it won't be your last. Good on ya for up skilling - that in itself is commendable. Treat the business you work for as if it is your own - always go the extra mile, add as much value to the business as you can and it can only "work out".

Well done on making the decision and bagging the apprenticeship. If you're bored after 10 years in the job, imagine another 20+ years.

Absolutely take the job. If you've got a good attitude and are always willing to do your best, it will work out. Your boss won't care if you get a few things wrong, they'll only care that you are attentive and want to constantly learn and improve.

You said it's 90km, but what is the actually travel time? Rent option for a few months is probably worth considering?

4 years of apprenticeship goes quickly, the brass may not be as good, but once done and you've got your ticket then you are set.

Take the job
At 25 years old I gave up a secure govt job to go to uni and retrain. Had a mortgage. Wife was supportive, but we made the deal that if I failed a subject I'd go back to the old job.
No regrets 30 years later.

+1 on rent nearby, rent out your house. Commuting suuucks and stressful enough starting a new job, plus it gives you time to suss out the neighbourhood and decide where you want to buy rather than stressing about finding somewhere perfect.

fwiw. Even if you it doesn't work out you'll be happier coming back to a job knowing what is out there then if you stay in your current job and never know what the other option was like.

Just suck it up and get your trade cert Then the world is your oyster

Take the apprenticeship! I'm on my 3rd career change. Learning new skills is everything, im lucky enough to be in a new career that's assisted by my last 2 careers. One thing I tell myself is everyday I must learn something new each day, small or big, just something new everyday.

Going by the engrish, it's definitely Macro.

Mad f u dont. First year and a half might be tght but by year three unwill be making good money. Year four almost back to where u were without OT. And then u have the potential to earn serious $. Worst case s still great. Mu advice is to try and learn as much as possible. Be as keen as possible and try and adopt the vision of owning your own gig. (Instead of looking at obstacles to it). Tradies worst case is same money as everyone else. Best case way better

Hi thanks for everyone, the one gave me positive and also the one bit negative side. Yes I'm married and have a little one under 1 year old. my family is not supportive at all, keep making me stay at my current job because it's gets good $$ and close to home. My current job is not secure, who knows when we loose our contract and the. I have start looking another labour job. I have been labourer for over 13 years just want to be skilled labourer so I'll never run out work and always provide food on table for my family.
And hey sorry if some of u big guns got offended- through me asking some motivation. I'm 32 years old, 6ft 3inch weigh 140 kg. Didn't really want to ask any of my friend or work mates that need advice or motivation because family is not supportive. so I choose internet seabreeze site to put it out there. rest thanks I'm going to start my apprenticeship on 17th jan next year. ????????

Good on you. I can understand family being concerned about the changes this will bring, moving house, starting a new job, less pay initially, but the long term benefits will outweigh all of this by a long way. Labouring might be fine at 32, but by the time you're 50+ it will have taken a toll on your body. You're going to be better paid as a plumber, and probably more importantly, be in charge of your own destiny. Make sure you always do the job right and take that little extra time to clean up well after you're done, and you'll have work queued up for the rest of your life.

Don't know whether this is a compelling arguemnt but...

I had some extensive plumbing work done recently which took the plumber 3 weeks to get me the bill as he couldn't figure out which sized boat he wanted to get

Dont be a plumber

Get your sprinkler fitter fire protection ticket instead. The difference is overwhelming. Youll be lifting carryinf cutting alot of pipe and theres a fair bit of physicw and maths involved with pressure and bends etc but its definitely the way to go.

Most people go thru chubb or endfire etc etc

Plumbing plumbing... your just going to be same as any other trade youve worked with in last 13 years formworkers steelys concreaters etc etc but fire safety/spribkler fitting is waaaay more money
