i wouldn't buy a second hand one unless you can find one that has barely been used because stuff wears out quick . Id definitely get full suspension its faster more fun and more comfortable they even climb better because there is heaps more rear wheel grip might take a bit more energy to climb the same hill though , i wouldnt worry about the lock ups most bikes dont bob that much anyway .
29ers are kind of like a old guy version , they roll smoothly over things but they turn and respond that much slower .
I've bought a second hand yeti full xtr,the only things I've replaced since I've bought is it brake pads, gear cables inner and outer and a full service for both shocks. This will need to be done every year anyway
The bikes a 2006 and I've owned 4 years paid $1800 it was $6000 new.
Weighs nothing and rides beautiful
When you can get new xt wheels for $400 online, $100 xt shadow+ derailleur so what if they wear out after 2000kms
Don't get me wrong it's nice to buy a new bike but don't get sucked into all the hype, if you spend $2000 on a new one and you really enjoy it within 2 years you will sell it for $500 and spend $5000 on the latest and greatest, welcome to the world of mountain bike riding.
A cheap bike is heavy, a heavy bike is hard work for somebody who's unfit. After a couple of months of struggling you jump on somebody's expensive bike and see how much easier it is...bam that spark lights up and then it's off home to tell the other half you need $5000
Save the hassle spend $2000 on a good second handy.
Heaps of guys see bikes as fashion accessory and change them every 2 years so there's always good deals around
Agree full Suss over hard tail. Hard tails for racing XC only
Most bike shops will build your online bike for $100 as the want you to use them for servicing anyway.
Good luck and wear protection.
