I have a PR visa which has expired. I have been reliably informed that if I can secure a job offer in Aus I can get a resident return visa which will enable to enter Aus with PR status.

The problem I am facing is that one of the recruiters I use keeps telling me I will have to fly out to Aus for an interview. I have told him that I cannot enter Aus without an RRV as it will invalidate my PR visa.

Just wondering if there are any Java devs on here who might know of any recruiters or of jobs going in the companies they work for.

I'm a Pom and will consider West or East coast.

maybe try a different recruiter who will be willing to present your CV and if shortlisted arrange a Skype interview (I have just done one this morning )

I'm in IT (Perth but not in development) and the market is still very slow, rates are low and you are competing with lot of "locals" going for the same job.

That being said, there seems to be quite a few java jobs on seek (www.seek.com.au/java-jobs) I would hit them all and maybe you'll get some response.

Another idea is to post on linkedin to your network describing your situation?

I can recommend one or two Perth based recruiters who may go the extra mile (they did for me recently). PM me if interested.

I am struggling to find a decent recruiter in Aus. I found one (UK based with office in Sydney) but he keeps telling me I will have to pay to fly out for an interview. I reckon he is talking *$%$%$ and just being awkward.

do you really mean you can not start for another 20 months? or is that a typo? All jobs are "here and now" and I don't think anyone can help you this far out....

Well spotted. April 2017 onwards.

I can't talk for development jobs, but I think IT here on the east coast is still slow. I think unemployment stats are lower than the true unemployment rate. WA has let go a lot of mining jobs, so this pushes people back into non-mining jobs and it has a flow on effect. On top of this, the lessening of money from mining slows down the economy as well.

We also have a huge number of 457 workers, in what seems to be a shrinking market.

Recruiters aren't worth anything these days. They all seem to be new as they are just trying to build up CV databases and throw their best match at any job opportunity. There is nothing that they do that makes you stand out and they are just in it for themselves. If it takes someone else to land THEM that role, then you are not important.

Your best hope is to try and contact companies or individuals directly. Being from outside the country you will fall into the too hard basket, and a local recruiter will present someone that looks simpler on paper.

Real jobs here seem to be done by referral, and the recruitment agents are a waste of time.

From my experience, a lot of jobs on seek are just copies of the same jobs submitted by different recruitment agents.

@flanagaj... Brexit is on hold, and Australia isn't part of the EU either, it's part of China .

I've spent 2016 literally begging for a job.... perm, contract, temp, even direct b2b, taking contacts out for coffee. Government seems to be the only one hiring. I've done direct marketing, linkedin marketing... all fruitless... I've broadend my skills and I've got MS certs coming out of my ying yang.

Sorry mate, but you're more likely to find an affordable property in Oz than an IT job... construction's going well though, but that too looks like it could fall off a cliff any minute.

Yeah, sorry I couldn't give you more positive news. I am surprised here by the people that think the job market is good, but these are people that haven't had to look for a job for 10 years and think that every email where a recruitment agent says they have a job for them is actually a real job and not just sent to another 1 or 200 people. On top of this the other agents are doing the same for another couple of hundred people.

What I found disconcerting here is that in order to register for unemployment benefits you effectively have to have nothing in the way of assets, so in reality the number of people registered for unemployment benefits is not even close to the number of people actually looking for work. There must be a few people out there relying on their spouses for income or getting by on savings.

Our government seem to still have an open door policy with regards to temporary skilled workers, which means that potential graduates don't bother studying in these areas as there are no jobs.

There is already an impact from outsourcing to other countries, but now its like the jobs here are being taken by temporary people. By temporary, I mean they intend to live here, but once they realise how expensive housing is they will probably find it more attractive to go elsewhere.
