I think the problem started by people feeding the gulls, They no longer want to hunt for fish, they feel entitled to chips, and attack anybody that doesn't offer up their bag.
I doubt this is the way it happened. Seagulls appear to have excellent vision and can spot things from a long way away. Why fish when you can hang around human habitats and pick up plenty of scraps from the local tip? You don't even need to get wet and there is food for everyone.
In NSW I am sure I saw many more seagulls at the tip than ever on the ocean.
Now the bin chickens have moved into my area and I am sure no one has coaxed them here. They just seem to have figured out its a good place even in winter.
