As they say, everyone hates them unless you're riding one.

Interested to hear others thoughts on owing and maintaing a jetski. I am interested in the concept and have started to research them. I am chasing one to access surf breaks, diving and towing in.

I get scared off when I start to look at the comparative figures.

For example, I own a boat with a 60hp Mercury motor. It is new and I am look after it. Yearly service, flushed....etc. I get that there are variables with all motor driven watercraft, however all things being equal this should last in excess of 3000 hours (going by research averages). The flip side is the high performance jet ski motor. The average hours of life for these things is around 400-500 hours for a four stroke.

So, if you're doing reasonable hours on the ski it could last 5-6 years or so then a rebuild or new motor. I am going to assume massive $$$$ to resolve this issue. Or, I suppose risk massive depreciation on a 200 hour plus ski that you may want to move on and sell.

Anyway, keen to hear others experiences on the pros and cons of maintennance situation with skis.\

I owned one about 10 years ago.
Id say i didnt runamuk .... much.

Used to cruise around, tow a tube with kids, run along beach jumping waves, well away from crowds.

So, very expencive toy as high performace, fast

Glad to have sold it, dont miss it.

That said, with the reasons ur looking id say go for it.

No need for hi output ski as a less pricy one will do what u want

Can a small boat fulfill all those purposes tho? The full blown nazare tow surfing is like... one in a never so if you were to house your expectations to within your LOCAL why not a much smaller less $$ vehicle that does all the same **** and is far faaaar less stress

Ever seen oars on a jetski for motor problems? What have fishermen been useing for a minute?

Im keen on a scubadiveing and spear fishing vessell myself but something i could tow or keep ontop of my troupie so a jetski has been an idea but so is a nice liveaboard maybe just stop ****ing around you only live once sell the house buy a bloody 42ft cat and just get after it

I once was once dead set on buying a jet ski, I wanted something that would fit in my garage that could be used on windless days for wakeboarding. With occational diving fishing.

I went to Busselton and hired one , for what seemed a fortune for 30 mins, just to check it out. I couldn't wait for the 1/2 hour to be up and have never riddden one since. Boring as bat ****.

the twin sit down ones are boring. Even if they are super fast. Possibly good for coastal touring or quick and easy spearfishing or tow surfing.
At least the old fashioned stand up ones require some skill (I couldnt even stand up when i tried one) and you can do all the jumps and flips etc. possibly a good no wind activity? they seem very expensive and rare through

This is my thought every time I see dudes on the river. It looks like the equivalent of riding a motorbike in circles in the world's largest car park.

The not having to rely on wind, go when it suits you thing interests me

Reckon the Seadoos tend to have the most issues. Yamaha is all they ride now.
One has a 1100 and its all you need - fanging around towing two full size adults on a biscuit into big whips no worries.
You can go the supercharged 1800 + but you'll most likely need good medical insurance too

Well that's pretty much the opposite of what most of what my mates say
The Seadoos Use a closed loop cooling system rather than the open loop system of the other manufacturers
In other words your not pumping salt/crap water around the engine for cooling
I suppose it comes down to what you want it for A practical adaptable boat or a hoon mobile

If I had money to waste I would buy a Yamaha Super jet

Id rather a thundercat than a sit down jetski. They look awesome

I'd be happy with a 4.2m tinny with a 40hp 2 stroke
