Not sure how long the fuel goes for and whether in OZ there would be a bush fire risk...

Yeah when I watched it this morning the first thing I thought was bush fire risk, I was hoping it was going to be a battery pack type of set up.

A few years ago wen I was messing about with RC planes and multirotors there were a few guys with jets that are serious bits of gear, apparently known to explode at times, I'm thinking this must be somewhat different technology. Because their start up procedure was quite a lengthy process.

Typically two minutes flight time I think, so you have two minutes to get there and then back again, unless you are counting on a lift back, which typically you cannot.
They are running five turbines all up, two on each arm for directional lift and one back mounted turbine to blow you along.
Turbines snorkel through kero at a high rate so endurance will always be a problem. To carry sufficient quantity to actually go anywhere makes the kit so heavy it wont fly.
Look them up for an interesting read. Gravity Industries.

They look like heaps of fun and apparently not too hard to fly because of the lift thrust being on both arms, so your natural reactions to put an arm out to save yourself does just that.
All the turbines are controlled by small computers, about six all up including an overall systems manager to balance the thrust and mostly prevent you from killing yourself, although I think if you tried just a little bit hard you could still manage it.
They could get Flysurfer to give it a test flight to see how it goes moving sand hills.

The arm turbines run at a fixed rate adjusted to haul your fat ass into the sky, and the back mounted turbine is adjustable by the throttle control for forward motion.

There are a few vids up. Have a look... I want one already.
