sn said..Mobydisc said..If taxes are spent just on roads & hospitals then why do we have a federal government as large as we have? All those services or products you list are primarily the responsibility of state governments.
because the state governments have to beg the Federal government for much of those funds!
did you ever notice that major road works almost always have "federal government funding" propaganda signs?
Sure, the GST was supposed to get rid of the begging but it didn't. The GST was also supposed to replace a bunch of state taxes. Again the GST did not. All it did was supplement the existing state taxes. My big question would be where does it written in the Australian Constitution the Commonwealth government is responsible for roads or even has the right to tax fuel used for transportation?
I'll be waiting. Crickets....
Lets just hear about the wonders the government does for us. How they are all wonderful people who are selfless, hardworking and incredibly creative. We will hear without them we'd all be running around with axes trying to kill each other. We need our wise overlords who have our best interests as their first priority.
The problem is we have is we have the seen. We have the hospital. Its seen. We have the road. Its seen. However what about the unseen? That money is taken from somewhere and the vast majority of it is taken from those just getting by day by day, paying the rent, the electricity bill and their tax bill.
The other thing is this corona virus has shown how absolutely hopeless they are when it does actually come to a crisis.
