Hi,
I cant leave my fob for the car in a secure key box on my vehicle while out paddling as the fob will automatically unlock the car if someone were to put their hand on the door handle, then its an easy push button start and they have a new landcrusier to drive away in. So I have to resort to taking the fob with me on the water. ive read about people using clip seal bags etc. However im not so trusting of them and new Toyota fobs are not cheap according to my dealer. I was thinking of using a spare gopro case and putting a lanyard on it? I have faith in the gopro case as ive used them for years and never had a leak, i put silicon grease on the seals all the time as an additional measure. however they may be a little bulky as I would prefer to put the fob in the pocket of my boardies.

I doubled up on good quality resealable bags for my phone, it got wet, so don't risk that . You may be able to pick up a waterproof pouch / container at a camping / adventure store. I know they're out there , J

I have a cruiser also. Press the button on the side of fob, and pull on the ring. There is an actual key that will pull out. You can then hide the fob in the car, and manually lock the drivers door with the key (must be with the key, not the internal button on the door).
Key goes on rope around neck.

Ah ok, ive pulled the key out before when I bought the car but that was just me having a nosey at the remote, so I presume the fob wont work with the key missing from it?

Key is actually for when the fob battery is flat. I'm pretty sure it will still work without the key as the fob can still be used without the battery (by placing it directly over the start/stop button). I guess it depends on how trusting you are of the fob hiding place in the car.
Out of interest, i have put the fob through the washing machine on 3 occasions with no problems. When you snap the case open, there is a rubber seal inside (water repellant, not waterproof).
I use my VW van when windsurfing, and have had a blank key cut to take out on the water (no transponder in key, so won't start the car) . I leave the fob key hidden in the car. If someone broke in the alarm would go off.
I would be more worried over losing the fob when on the water - this happened to a friend of mine.

Does anyone else think this problem, while genuine, is a good example of tech just complicating our lives instead of making them better?

Not sure about the cruiser, but I can disable remote keyless entry and keyless start from the menu system on my Jeep. Three button presses and it's turned off. Remove the key from the fob, lock the doors with the key and you're done.
In other words, RTFM.

I've a beep-beep key that I can't get a copy of. I take my sail and board down in two trips and in-between, when I'm out of sight, I hide the key.
Old-Skool solution to a modern, technical problem.

I miss Shearwater where I'd leave the key in the ignition and the windows open.

For years I took my call phone out in a paqua. In the end I used a smaller clamp style cover then put that inside an arm Velcro paqua. The two layers was an extra fail safe.

I know it's for a prius but it has a disable button for the smart key. Aswell the antennas for the smart key system are only located near doors and rear so you could place it in a locked box at the front of the car and it wouldnt work. Surely there is a manual for your toyota and it has similar features. Otherwise good luck to Toyota selling cars to kitesurfers. Another option is a sealed thick metal box to place the key inside the locked box to block the radio signals.

my piece of crap Hyundai ix35, told by dealer, put the wireless zapper behind the fuel door.
this is a designed shielded area to allow the zapper to be stored in the car area.
then use the key to reopen car door to access fuel door.
maybe Toyota is the same, try putting it inside fuel door and see if the keyless system still works

Useful additions for all the board companies to consider....

How about the board manufacturers design a waterproof, lockable space within the fore deck of the board just for keys or a phone.
Would be very handy. I would have paid extra for this on my new Isonic if Starboard had that option.
Maybe they could go further and provide GoPro mounts. With CNC manufacturing, it would be very easy, and maybe only add 200 grams.

A wet-pack pocket in the clew of a sail for a for car fob key would be a nice addition for any sail manufacturer to consider.

Look forward to seeing these additions on the 2016 gear ....

^^^^ a board repairer could route a hole and mould the Pelican case into the board, leaving the lid half proud of the top surface. $100 tops.

Good idea, lock it to someone else's car....

Seacured now make a specific lock that is oversize to fit larger key fobs and they have an internal pouch that blocks remote access / proximity keys.
