Read yesterday in the West Australian that its proposed that drivers who speed away from Police and get caught will get a minimum of 6 months jail without parole!

injure someone and its like 12 months or so.

Aren't the jails full enough? Are they privatized? Doesn't jail just make criminals worse?

Community service would be more productive...

I honestly don't know, what can be done with the element in society that has no fear of the law and it's processes?

If the law brings in mandatory penalties for car chases, maybe the hoons will be even more reckless trying to avoid being caught.

Jails are full............. then just the cane!

Trash their phones, including the sim card. Better still, force them to do it themselves. That'll upset them more than anything else you could possibly do, and their mummies and daddies will soon get pissed off with having to buy them new ones.

This is why I'm in favour of speed cameras. No stupid police chases or check points, more man-hours avaliable for actual policing real crime.

Neither do the cops

Sounds good. Wouldn't put a hoon in the speeding away from cops category. Dropping a skid is quite a different thing.
People shouldn't be running from the cops and I'd suspect those that are have more to hide.

If you exceed 180kph they won't follow you at that speed. If you get caught doing over 150kph you get sent to psychological evaluation

The police were hit from pillar to post by media and moral crusaders in preceding decades when pursuits resulted in crashes and innocent deaths. Somehow the cops are made the bad guy when the real crim has a head on at 160 killing themselves and some poor family. Tragic yes, but they should never of hung our police out to dry then... making them hand tied now.

And the cycle comes around again again where we as a society blame the police now for not catching them quick enough now!!!

If we allow the police to continue chases, the speeds and risks taken start to get out of hand very quickly for all parties involved.

It may well be a good outcome if the car thief or dead beat only kills himself but unfortunately it's usually some innocent person who pays the price.

It's a lose lose for police.

I'm a bit confused. The op discussed hoons being stolen cars evading police. Is the term interchangeable in WA? Here a hoon is d'head doing a burnout to show off and a crim is a crim.
if we're talking hoons , crush their car on the 3rd offence. Don't add to the prison debacle.

if it's Crims then sentence them individually mandatory is rubbish.

exactly - it is media gobbledegook. There is already imprisonment for 'evade police' in a pursuit situation so maybe they now want to extend it? That's where the hoon part comes in?? who knows with the media.

Bit tough on a family that just lost a member due to some drop kick speeding, crashing and life lost. Caught by a camera with two or three weeks later getting a notice in the mail.
Visible policing is the only answer, who stop said speeder, and either is issued a fine on the spot, or has car confiscated.
Not bloody bullcrap cameras.

Won't be long before they invent a gun-type thingo that electronically disables a car. c1970 UFO's had them.

In Western Australia 2014 alone were 640 pursuits....
In the greater Los Angeles area (with a population almost 10x larger if not more) were 1200 pursuits in 2014.

Clearly the current guideline and punishment encourages the crims to run more in WA than in LA (where police will ram, wrestle and shoot very easy) when here they will be pamper the fellas in the remote chance of catching anyone.

Casualties will always exist, however the incentive to evade and be wilder than ever so police won't follow is here, not there.
Maybe the fellas here thinking we are doing right shall suggest the police to block and clear the roads ahead from the guy fleeing...that would be nice.

I agree with you Mazdon. Our Police have their hands tied.
One of Australias origional "do-gooders", a bloke named Tony Vinson, caused a lot of harm to Police & Corrections effectiveness. Years ago the police could use the 'Summary Offences Act' to enforce the law. In those days a hoon could be kicked up the arse so bad his nose bled. You freakin' beaut !!! Grab the little bastard by the ear....THAT hurts!!
Felixdcats' idea of caning them is brilliant. Have a Doctor, a Magistrate, a Clergyman all present, give 'em half a dozen across the arse. Pay the professionals in attendance a grand for attending. CHEAP...jail costs a fortune.
Bring back the Summary Offences Act !!
