Look out for this one

https://www.hondaoutboards.com.au/

The discount prices are just believable enough to create interest and they try to suck you in to purchasing by offer additional discount for paying with direct deposit. I have to admit it's very well done and I can see how people lose money. Honda Marine Australia and the ACCC knew nothing about

Confession
I got caught with this scam, paid up, waited 3-4 months for the outboard.
The deal was to collect it from the nearest honda agent. Honda knows all
about this scam , just fob you off, they are complicit in that they don't warn
the public. I paid by Amex which saved me as I got a refund due non delivery
of product. They set up the web site get a few mugs, then shutdown and
hide for a while. beware!

Seriously, full refund on a new outboard motor that you have been using for 30 days??

The typical english errors are also a dead give away.

"We have partners in all this regions"

"30-days money back guarantee"

"If for any reason, within the 30 days money back guarantee period, you will be unsatisfied (or changed your mind for any reason) "

Knowing about a scam and not telling the public hardly makes them complicit, they're not involved in the scam in any way and don't get any benefit from it either. I think it's well established that if you want to buy something online these days you due your own due diligence on the website. The amount of effort you put into checking the integrity of the seller is in proportion with the amount of money you spend.

Yeah, but much easier to say that once you've been told it's a scam.

Good on you Boofta for admitting your mistake and glad it worked out alright for you.
Out of interest did you consider reporting the site to scamwatch?

Seriously, who buys an outboard motor online anyway?

They are not that cheap, shops and manufacturer-sponsored deals are going all the time...... its not a pair or sport shoes or a iPad...............

If I was after an outboard at $2K to $20K - or for that matter a gennie, lawnmower, lathe, etc - that sort of power equip - no way would I buy online.
Freight kills you and the dealers know it so they offer decent deals and will order in for you. At least then you get a decent sevicing and extras deal also.

When I buy runners, a spraygun, 100 screws for surfboard fin boxes etc, of course I buy online. But really, an outboard?

How did Amex approve this fake company as a merchant , and allow them to accept Credit card payments.
Banks have to do due diligence on all prospective Card Merchants (including ABN and ACN searches) and Credit checks to establish they are good for recourse.
Amex might be more careful in future as they have obviously lost money to this scam, as I'm sure the perpetrator would have run with the money before Amex tried to get it back.
At least you didn't purchase via bank transfer, which most scams use for the above reasons

I agree...
this buying online era is becoming a bit to weird I think..
who would spend big $$$$ on any thing that they can't put there hands on (or inspect in person) before buying????
don't understand some peoples logic.
possibly I have made it to the "synical and grumpy old man" stage of life..

The web site did not quote delivery, It offered pick up at the nearest Honda dealer- so far from a silly thing to accept.
Use credit cards/ paypal to mitigate risk of non delivery.
Honda are fully complicit in that they play " we have no knowledge of this delivery system for outboards"
I can't be the first or last mug to be cheated by this scam, I talked to Honda Australia in Melbourne about it
they claim to have never heard about it. Highly unlikely, as the scam included local pickup at their dealers.
They would have had enquiries from every mug caught up in this scam.

Last year a mate bought a $30k boat from the states for $16k . It never turned up , lost his money and the contacts . Then bought a boat here for $ 30k. Now he has a 30k boat that cost him $ 46k . Wife not happy !
I bet he wished he bought a new wife

You can't blame Honda for scammers. Do you think they are busy googling themselves? It's not their fault. Credit card should block?
