We are going to spend 100 bln dollars on second war technology 12 Ubots submarines.But when it comes to manufacture vaccine for COVID 19 ( when eventually developed we need to realy and wait for mercy to sell us when their own needs are fulfilled.
Why not to build pharmaceutical industrial plants able to produce everything from aspiring to the most sophisticated medicines ? Australian scientist have the highest reputation in world and quality achievements already. But all discoveries from our Universities go overseas to be implemented and then sold at profits. Pharmacology have the highest profit margins from all industries. Our high standards quarantine the highest quality product , unlike Chinese medicines that could be made from grinded plastic.I doubt that quality pharmaceutical plant cost near 100 bln that submarines cost as alone, say nothing about jet fighters , frigates and other military nonsense that may not have any practical application during this century or next.

Also Pharmacology is notorious for being very hit and miss, and almost entirely miss. The hits are only so, oftentimes unethically profitable, to make up for the other 99.9% that missed, failed, were nothing but a money pit.

You are right but we already do research in Australia and have result at the highest level. So we don't need to fund much new research but rather ability to realize final product of this research. Then sell it at profit, something we are giving away now for free.Beside quite big proportion of that pharmaceutical business is not top end rocket science, just manufacturing chemicals and biological substances at strict , quality standards.

Surely our scientists can come up with the next opioid to have doctors push and get people addicted to, for all of us to profit from.

Amazingly looks like some medication will not be optional but rather compulsory, Vaccination is one of those.

Why do you say that? I have heard nothing from anyone in Australia suggesting making vaccination compulsory.

However protecting vulnerable populations like childcare, schools and nursing homes from those that refuse to immunise themselves from life threatening diseases, by refusing them contact with the vulnerable is sure not un-reasonable?

Its a far cry from "compulsory" though and merely preserving the rights of the vulnerable to not be put at risk by others choices.
